Jonathan Roumie Calls Alice Cooper ‘Epic Example Of Christ’s Love At Work’

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE CHOSEN’s Jonathan Roumie just shared a clip from his new series, JONATHAN & JESUS, which features an interview with rock legend Alice Cooper.

“My meeting with the legendary rock icon, @alicecooper was mind-blowing on so many levels,” the actor wrote on Facebook. “Thank you Alice and Sheryl Cooper for taking the time to sit down with me to hear your story and talk about Jesus. And for all you do for the community and kids…Epic examples of Christ’s love at work!!”

In the video clip, Cooper spoke about how his career in rock turned him away from his faith.

“I grew up knowing that Jesus Christ was the answer,” he explained. “The band came along when I was 15, 16, 17, and nobody was expecting it to take off. Nobody was expecting it to turn into what it turned into. Of course, that took me as far away as I could possibly get, and I became the exact poster boy for what you shouldn’t be. The character, not me, but the character.”

Cooper has previously spoken about the impact his faith has had on his life, telling Newsweek, “My wife and I are both Christian. My father was a pastor, my grandfather was an evangelist. I grew up in the church, went as far away as I could from it — almost died — and then came back to the church.”

Roumie’s new docuseries, JONATHAN & JESUS, “documents my experiences playing Jesus through the context of @thechosentvseries; the effect playing Jesus has had on its viewers (as well as the challenges it presents to me personally), and the monumental and universe-shifting impact #JesusChrist has had on history and culture throughout the world!” the actor explained in a Facebook post.

Movieguide® previously reported on Roumie’s reflections on how taking on the role of Jesus has changed his life:

While at a recent conference, THE CHOSEN actor Jonathan Roumie discussed how he approaches playing the role of Jesus, and the power that TV and movies have to connect viewers to God.

One of the strengths of Roumie’s portrayal of Jesus is his ability to capture the humanity of Jesus, without losing his divinity. Even in the most mundane and human moments of the show, viewers still feel the divinity of Roumie’s Jesus.

“There are moments where I read the script [and think], okay, this is one of the human moments in Jesus’ life and ministry that we’re depicting. But for me, I never want to let go of the divinity, somehow, even in this very human interaction. [It’s important] that God’s divinity somehow shines through, that God’s authority somehow shines through in this character,” Roumie said.

“They’re not recorded, but the mundane matters of the earthly life had to have been discussed, talked about, joked about, fretted over by the disciples, because they must of,” he continued. “And Jesus being human, fully human and fully divine, in his full humanity could still relate to them in some fashion and what were those conversations like, but He’s still God.”
