Though singing vulnerably about her faith and hardships seems to come naturally to Katy Nichole, it’s actually a skill she had to learn.

She recently shared how she had to face her struggle to have “honest conversations” with God while writing her song “When I Fall.”

“When I was writing that song, it was kind of the first time that I realized I can have really honest conversations with the Lord,” Nichole said, per Church Leaders. “I don’t know why, but for so long, I was so scared that I couldn’t bring my anger and my frustration and my doubts and my questions because I thought that God would not want that. I thought that He was only wanting my joy and my praise. And I think I believed that lie for so long that I just never talked about anything.”

When she took a moment to cry out to God, things began to change within her.

“I was sitting at my piano, and I was crying, and I said, ‘God, I’m tired of trying to be okay. I’m tired of pretending I’m fine. I’m not fine. And my heart is broken. I’m sad. I am hurting,’” she recalled confessing. “I was going through a lot of chronic pain at the time and so I was just being so upfront because I just didn’t have another choice. And I did feel a lot of peace in that moment to just say what I needed to say.”

In that vulnerable moment, Nichole realized that God doesn’t just want her in her perfection. He wants her in her brokenness too.

“I realized God doesn’t want just half of me — half of me is the joy and the happiness and the wonderful things,” Nichole said. “But then on the flip side, I’m a human being who experiences the range of emotions that we have in this life. Anger, frustration, questions — those are still things that the Lord wants me to bring to Him and to surrender to Him because I can’t handle those things on my own.”

Matthew 11:28 reminds us of this when Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Currently Nichole is on the Winter Jam tour alongside other artists such as Chris Tomlin and Matthew West. The tour travels throughout the nation until the end of March.

In a recent post to Instagram, she reflected on sweet moments at the last Winter Jam and expressed her excitement for this year.

“I am so grateful for the sweetest moments I had on the last WJ I got to be a part of in 2024 !! I can’t wait to make new memories with you guys !!” she said.

We all can learn from Nichole and spend time having honest conversations with God.
