Angel Studios’ THE KING OF KINGS is coming to the Kennedy Center!

“When I saw the advertising campaign for KING OF KINGS, I immediately knew we needed to have it come to the Kennedy Center,” Ambassador Richard Grenell, the president of the Kennedy Center, said, via Fox News. “And then coincidentally, I was asked to be on a panel with the CEO of Angel Studios, so I cornered him. This is family-friendly programming that we will be doing more of in the future.”

David Fischer, Head of Acquisitions & Business Affairs at Angel Studios, added, “THE KING OF KINGS has become the most successful theatrically released faith-based animated film in history. But its greatest achievement is in the hearts it’s moved — and its screening at the Kennedy Center is a symbol of just how far truth and light can travel.”

The special screening of THE KING OF KINGS is part of the Kennedy Center’s new move to spotlight family-friendly and faith-based content. THE KING OF KINGS is the first Christian movie to be shown at the Kennedy Center since 2022.

It’s no surprise the Kennedy Center chose to add THE KING OF KINGS to its programming — the animated movie has made over $65 million at the global box office, per BoxOfficeMojo.

THE KING OF KINGS also broke a long-held box office record. It made $19 million in its first weekend at the domestic box office, beating out 1991’s THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, which earned $14.5 million in its opening weekend.

THE KING OF KINGS is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ novel “The Life of Our Lord.”

“A father tells his son the greatest story ever told, and what begins as a bedtime tale becomes a life-changing journey,” an official synopsis of the movie reads. “Through vivid imagination, the boy walks alongside Jesus, witnessing His miracles, facing His trials, and understanding His ultimate sacrifice. THE KING OF KINGS invites us to rediscover the enduring power of hope, love, and redemption through the eyes of a child.”

The movie’s cast includes Oscar Isaac, Pierce Brosnan, Mark Hamill, Forest Whitaker, Kenneth Branagh and Uma Thurman.

In an interview with Variety, Hamill called THE KING OF KINGS “a revelation” for young audiences.

“Children are going to find this enormously appealing, even if they aren’t drawn towards religious stories,” the STAR WARS actor explained. “This one has everything a great adventure should have, and yet it teaches such positive values: the idea of faith and selflessness and doing what’s right for the good of everyone, and not just yourself.”

THE KING OF KINGS will be shown at the Kennedy Center June 1.
