Kids Are Learning Important Life Lessons from This Special Show

By Movieguide® Contributor

BLUEY is teaching kids that sometimes moms need a minute for themselves, and parents couldn’t be happier.

A mom recently asked her son what he learned from watching BLUEY, a kid’s animated series about a little Blue Heeler pup and her family.

The boy learned “that it’s hard for moms to teach kids,” he shared. “So sometimes moms just need 20 minutes.”

“I mean, I’ve never loved BLUEY more,” said TODAY host and mom of two, Savannah Guthrie. “…Sometimes you need a little ‘Ahh.’”

In the BLUEY episode that the little boy referenced, Bluey’s mom is surrounded by Bluey, her kazoo and her little sister Bingo, who tells jokes while Mom cooks in the kitchen.

When Dad comes home after getting a haircut, Mom hands him her apron and says, “I need 20 minutes where no one comes near me.”

One follower commented on TODAY’s Instagram clip, “Yes this!!! This and the way Blueys car always looks like a train wreck in the inside! Love this real life show!!!”

“Mom needs 20 minutes just like Bluey’s mom. That’s all the kids need to hear,” another commented.

Movieguide® rated BLUEY’s minisodes series +3 for its family encouragement, kindness, creative storytelling and witty comedy.

There are over a hundred BLUEY episodes and plenty more lessons that kids take away, like the importance of imagination, communication, empathy and responsibility.

The Institute for Family Studies says BLUEY is “pro-family” and the parents set great, realistic examples for kids. The parents have fun together and with their kids. They are insightful and caring. Though some days are hectic, at the end of the day, there’s a lot of love there. The institute also notes how positively the dad in the show is portrayed. He’s a great, playful father figure, unlike a lot of TV dads.

NPR pop culture commentator Stephen Thompson said:

BLUEY is a hit with young children, but it’s also found a devoted following among their parents, who have embraced the show’s emotional depth, as well as its messages about creativity, collaboration, and learning through emotional play…[BLUEY] balances gentle humor with some kind of lesson. But those lessons aren’t about letters or numbers. Instead they are about emotional intelligence thinking about others, sharing, collaborating, making time for the people, or in this case dogs, that you love. It’s also notably not just imparting lessons to kids. BLUEY has just as much to say to the parents watching at home.

Movieguide ® nominated BLUEY Episodes 348 and 349 “Ghostbasket” and “The Sign” in the Best Family TV category at the Movieguide® Faith & Values Awards Gala, which is taking place today, Feb. 7.
