In a society that sees pleasure as the ultimate goal, Kirk Cameron reminded his fans that suffering is part of the Lord’s plan to prepare us for heaven.

“If you measure God’s love by how easy your life feels, then you’re going to start to think that He doesn’t love you. If you measure God’s faithfulness by how much disappointment or grief you’ve had to endure in your life, you’re going to begin to question whether God is faithful at all. Here’s the bottom line: You will suffer in this life. And it’s not because God’s plan has failed. It’s not because He doesn’t love us, but because our suffering is actually an essential part of God’s good plan for you and for me,” Cameron explained.

“You see, what matters most to God [in your life] is your holiness,” he continued. “That is more precious to God than your temporary happiness. God’s not aching after a quick emotional high for us. He is after our eternal gratitude and joy.”

Cameron added, “That’s why God isn’t interested in signing off on my little wish list of preferences and comforts. God has not committed Himself to making my life between the day I got saved and the day I get to heaven as smooth as possible…The walk of faith is preparation for the final glorious destination that is guaranteed for every genuine child of God…We live in a world where God’s grace is preparing us through trials, through disappointments, through heartbreak, through pain, even suffering, for the eternal life, the eternal home that’s waiting for us.”

While this is a message that can be difficult to believe, especially during these times of hardship, the Bible backs these claims up. Christians need to look no further than Jesus to see that God uses pain and suffering for good, and it is sometimes a part of His plan. Jesus suffered immensely leading up to His death, enduring hours of torture from the Romans before hanging on the cross. That suffering, however, led to the redemption of humanity as our sins were forgiven by His death and resurrection.

At the same time, the Lord also understands that amid worldly pain and suffering, it can be difficult to trust His plan. Jesus even asked, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And as He hung on the cross, Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

While the Lord understands the difficulties of facing trials and suffering, Christians need to trust that God is faithful and that He truly uses all things for His good. It is only with this perspective that we can endure our trials and emerge with a stronger faith, rather than one that is rocked every time things do not go our way.
