For actress Kristen Bell, family time is more important than work.
“There’s like six weeks of the year when I’m in high octane mode. But I will say I’m only in high octane mode because I really do turn off my phone at five o’clock,” the actress told Variety. “That’s a non-negotiable for me.”
Bell continued, “So I rush, rush, rush during the day to try to get all these things done because when my kids get home and we’re all off work and the family is together, my phone goes into another room and we make dinner and watch a movie. Tonight, we’re watching CASTAWAY. I work really hard so that I can play really hard.”

The no-phone rule isn’t just in place for Bell. Her husband, actor and podcaster Dax Shepard, revealed their daughters don’t have phones or tablets.
“We don’t have a phone problem ’cause they’re not in the mix. And iPods aren’t, iPads aren’t in the mix and video games,” he said during an episode of “The Endless Honeymoon” podcast.
Shepard explained that he and Bell want their children to know the “world is enormous,” and it shouldn’t be “reduce[d]…to a seven-inch screen.”
“I don’t want your focus to be on a seven-inch thing when the world is all around you,” he continued, adding that he knows it’s “frustrating” for his daughters.
Shepard continued, “But look, you get to play with it at your friend’s house. I’m not saying you can’t play video games when you go out and about in the world. You do whatever you want to do, but it doesn’t happen here.”
The NOBODY WANTS THIS actress has previously spoken about how motherhood changed her life, as well as her outlook on her career.
“The thing parenthood did for me was it right-sized all my problems,” she told the “Motherly” podcast. “Like I was on this hustling hamster wheel of staying relevant and you know, going after my dreams, which is great, but there’s a time in your life you don’t meet many grandmas who are like hustling. I mean, because there’s different stages in your wisdom and your life and it’s okay to let those stages happen.”
Bell added, “That’s what I’ve grown to learn is like — The stages are okay. They all come and you know, someone in their twenties can hustle. And right now I can be more stationary and be more stable for my kids.”
Bell and Shepard are serious about their commitment to keeping their homes as phone-free as possible, preferring to focus on family in their free time.
