The first Ukrainian film festival will take place in Los Angeles this month.
“Discover the courage, endurance and humanity of Ukraine through the power of cinema,” the festival’s description reads.
The event, titled “Cinema of Resilience,” is put on by non-profits including the Ukrainian Culture Center, Inc., the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) and the Ukrainian Art Center. It will be held Nov. 21-23 at the Ukrainian Culture Center of Los Angeles.
UNWLA shared, “The festival’s mission is to bring audiences closer to the stories of ordinary people who, against their will, found themselves in extraordinary circumstances and fought for their lives and the independence of their country, demonstrating exceptional courage, resilience, and creativity.”
“Twelve internationally acclaimed documentaries will open a window into the lives of Ukrainians who face danger every day yet do not give up, nurturing hope and culture while preserving the unbreakable spirit of the nation,” the organization continued. ‘The festival aims to inspire not only empathy but also pride and admiration for those who continue to fight, create, and live with dignity and courage.”
A few highlighted films are A CENTURY OF STRENGTH: INSPIRING GENERATIONS, which shows the origins of the Ukrainian women’s movement in America; LITTLE ANGEL, which tells Ukrainian Art Center President Daria Chaikovska’s true story of how her family escaped the Soviet army during World War II; and CHILDREN IN THE FIRE, a mixed-media documentary about Ukrainian children forcibly taken to Russia or injured by Russian missiles.
