Actress Ali Larter moved her family from LA to Idaho, and she has no regrets.
The primary motivation for the move? Her and her husband, Hayes MacArthur’s, children.
“We love being with our children, so a lot of the people that we spend time with are our children’s — the parents of the children [who are their kids’ friends],” Larter explained.
She added, “We’re not in it just like doing adult dinners. We love when the house is packed with families and children are running around. So, that’s what we really saw there.”

Larter and MacArthur share Theodore, 15, and Vivienne, 10.
Larter said that the big move, which happened five years ago now, was “authentic and true to us, then positive things happened in our lives. And it’s like we made decisions for the right reasons, that what it felt like. Putting our kids first.”
They first spent time Idaho soon after the COVID-19 pandemic began.
“So, we went for two months thinking the kids’ schools would be reopened in California and they weren’t. They were doing online,” Larter explained. They eventually decided to move, and now that she doesn’t live in LA anymore, the LANDMAN star sees the crazy demands Hollywood puts on those who live there.
“You’re expected to show up for so many things. There are so many parties. There’s so much of that side of the life that I just didn’t feel like served us any longer. We just didn’t want to do that. We want to be with our children. So, that’s when I think the biggest change was. We came back after that summer, and we just made a go for it,” she said.
Larter is one of many celebrities who have left the city of Angels for a quieter life.
Matthew McConaughey ditched California for Austin in 2012, a decision he doesn’t regret. Previously he said, “Whether that was Sunday church, sports, dinner together as a family every night, or staying up after that telling stories in the kitchen, sitting at the island pouring drinks and nibbling while retelling them all in different ways than we told them before.”
Mark Wahlberg also left the LA bubble for Law Vegas in 2022. He explained, “We came here to just kind of give ourselves a new look, a fresh start for the kids, and there’s a lot of opportunity here. I’m really excited about the future.”
These actors’ decisions to move are a great reminder that no matter what, family comes first.
