Missed out on the live-action HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON in theaters? Eager to watch it again? Never fear — the movie just dropped on digital, with plenty of bonus features to enjoy.
“The home release is jam-packed with over 75 minutes of extras,” Gizmodo announced, pointing to deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes that show how the special effects were accomplished and a look at the new HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON theme park attraction at Universal.
There are also featurettes that show how the costumes and makeup were put together to turn the cast into believable Vikings, as well as one showing Mason Thames, who plays main character Hiccup, and the puppet and puppeteer performing the movie’s iconic Forbidden Friendship sequence.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is based on the hit animated movie of the same name, released in 2010.
“As an ancient threat endangers both Vikings and dragons alike on the isle of Berk, the friendship between Hiccup, an inventive Viking, and Toothless, a Night Fury dragon, becomes the key to both species forging a new future together,” a synopsis of the movie reads.
The original movie spawned two animated sequels, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 and HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD, as well as a series of short films and a television series, titled DRAGONS.
Like its animated predecessors, 2025’s HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON was a box office success, bringing in over $560 million at the global box office, per Box Office Mojo. It also received positive reviews, with Movieguide® calling the movie “fun and entertaining.”
A sequel to the live-action version is already on the way, with director Dean DeBlois telling DiscussingFilm, “It’s an exploration at the moment. I’m literally writing the script right now.”
DeBlois spoke to Movieguide® about the movie’s themes, singling out the story of reconciliation between Hiccup and his father.

“There’s something that’s quite wonderful about the parent having the humility to see that this kid, who he had seen kind of as a disappointment…is actually acting on a strength in disguise,” DeBlois explained. “He comes to see [Hiccup] in this enlightened way, as a leader for a new generation.”
He added, “Both characters are always acting out of love, but it’s this push and pull of love and expectation that gives way to a new definition of their relationship.”
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is now available to rent and purchase online, and a physical version of the movie will be available for purchase Aug. 12.
