Home-improvement store Lowe’s will be closing all US locations for 24 hours this month in celebration of Easter Sunday.
“I’m extremely proud of the commitment of our 300,000 associates who support our communities while providing excellent customer service — not only in spring, but all year-round,” Marvin Ellison, Lowe’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement about the decision.
He continued, “In recognition of our teams’ continued hard work, we are pleased to provide a well-deserved day off so they can spend Easter with their loved ones.”
Lowe’s 1,700+ locations will close at 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 19 and reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, April 21. The Lowe’s website will remain active, and customers will be able to make purchases through the site on Easter Sunday, per Newsweek.

It isn’t the only chain store closing its doors in observance of Easter. Target, Costco, Sam’s Club, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and Home Goods will also be closed April 20, as confirmed by USA Today.
Many stores have started closing for major holidays. In 2015, REI made headlines after announcing they would not be open on Black Friday and again in 2023 when they announced they would be closed on Christmas Eve.

Altar’d State, a popular women’s clothing chain store, also announced they would be closed Christmas Eve in 2023.
“It’s been a longtime goal of mine to close the stores on Christmas Eve,” Aaron Walters, co-founder, chairman and CEO of parent company Stand Out For Good, Inc., said. “Our team works so hard to make the Christmas season happen, and they deserve to rest and relax at home with their families.”
Vicky O’Neill, vice president of people development at the company, added, “For a seasonal associate, working Christmas Eve is expected. We are hoping to differentiate ourselves to prospective seasonal hires and create a new standard for retailers that puts associates and family first.”
While Walmart will remain open on Easter Sunday this year, the chain store has made a tradition out of closing its doors on Thanksgiving. The retailer has done so for the past five years, “so associates can spend the day with their families,” per a statement on the Walmart website.
As large chain stores decide to close their doors for major holidays, hopefully more businesses will take a cue from them and give employees the opportunity to spend time with their families on these special days.
