Matthew McConaughey Wants to Raise His Kids in Texas Because…

Actor Matthew McConaughey believes in the importance of living near family and having his children grow up somewhere with “common sense.”

“My family is here, my mom is here, she’s 92,” he explained of his family’s move from Malibu to Austin, Texas. “I’ve got brothers in Houston…Midland. Our family unit is here, we have resources and security here.”

McConaughey attended the University of Texas in Austin before making his way to Hollywood but always knew he wanted to raise his family in a more traditional place.

“This has always been home, there are multiple reasons for that,” he said, per Fox News.

“I did want to come back when Camila and I started a family. I wanted them to have what I grew up around. I think there’s a solid amount of common sense that’s untalked about, but we understand it here,” he said.

The McConaugheys sold their Malibu home in 2014 to move to Texas. Though the move was difficult for Camila, McConaughey’s wife, she’s grown to love the state.

“We can travel all over the world but the moment I land in Texas, the gravity just comes down, my shoulders relax, I know I’m home,” she told Southern Living.

“In Texas, we were going to the church that we like to attend every Sunday. Sports became a stronger tradition for the kids,” she added.

McConaughey continued, “Ritual came back, whether that was Sunday church, sports, dinner together as a family every night, or staying up after that telling stories in the kitchen, sitting at the island pouring drinks and nibbling while retelling them all in different ways than we told them before.”

The couple shares three children: Levi, 15, Vida, 14, and Livingston, 11.

In 2022, Camila shared how she and her husband make sure they are on the same page in their parenting.

“Matthew is the one the kids will usually go to [if they want to get away with something],” she explained. “But Matthew and I have a pretty good system where we don’t play good cop, bad cop. The kids need to understand that as parents, we are on the same page.”
