Matthew West knows that New Year’s resolutions are hard to keep, and he wants us to remember that we don’t have to be perfect.

“I’ve been thinking about the beginning of the year and New Year’s resolutions that I made,” he began a recent Instagram video. “I’m sure you made some too. I’m not going to ask how yours are going, because I know how mine are going.”

West shared New Year’s quote that got him thinking about where our focus should really be.

“Oprah Winfrey…she said, ‘Cheers to a New Year and another chance to get it right,’” he recalled.

The Christian singer continued, “I’m not trying to pick out Oprah Winfrey, but it’s like I was thinking about how, like, the New Year’s resolutions we make are like…another chance for us to try to rely on our flesh, to try to get it right like. It’s up to us to be good. And then we start the New Year off like we got another ladder to climb.”

But this year, rather than perfection, West wants to focus on rest.

“What does it look like to take a step back and rest?” he asked. He then read Psalm 34:8 which says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”

He concluded, “What if I could learn to rest and take refuge in the one who is good — taste and see that the Lord is good — even when we’re something less than good. That’s a message I need at the beginning of this year.”

People in the comment section appreciated the encouragement.

“I totally agree and thanks for your messages I do appreciate it,” one fan wrote.

Another said, “Yes! Thank You Lord Jesus!! ❤️🙌”

West often speaks and sings about our reliance on God. His new song, titled “Good,” is about exactly this — how we cannot be good on our own.

“This song is a reminder that God’s love isn’t earned by our goodness,” he said of the song. “We’re loved simply because He is good. My hope is that this song meets people right where they are and reminds them that God loves them, and that His grace has the power to change everything!”

Romans 3:10-12 reminds us that none of us are good by our own strength. It says, “No one is righteous— not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.”

Instead of focusing on perfection this year, let’s take a moment to rest and find refuge in God.
