Milburn Pennybags is coming to a living room near you, but not for family game night.
Netflix just announced a Monopoly-inspired competition game show that will be a “large-scale social experiment contest” and will “force contestants to form alliances and betray their competitors,” per Variety.
This move by Netflix is its latest unscripted IP content following SQUID GAME: THE CHALLENGE and THE GOLDEN TICKET, a competition based on the world of Willy Wonka, Deadline shared in a post on X.

In 1990, a Monopoly game show aired on ABC for one season. According to TVLine, the series was created by Merv Griffin and produced by his production company, Merv Griffin Enterprises. Netflix hopes its adaptation of the board game will air for longer than one season.
Monopoly fans can look forward to more than just a game show, though. Last year, Lionsgate announced a movie inspired by the iconic board game.
“As one of the most iconic games in the world, Monopoly provides an incredible platform for storytelling opportunities. We are thrilled to have the unique vision of LuckyChap and Lionsgate alongside us to bring this historic piece of popular culture to the big screen,” Hasbro Entertainment head of film Zev Foreman told the audience at 2024 CinemaCon, per Variety.

The film will star Margot Robbie (BARBIE). LuckyChap, Robbie’s company, is set to produce the live-action film. Writing duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will pen the script.
“We knew LuckyChap would be a beacon for the best talent in town, and Lionsgate & Hasbro are thrilled that Goldstein & Daley have decided to join the fun,” co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Erin Westerman, told Deadline. “We’ve been longtime admirers of their work — telling bold, original, intelligent stories for all audiences. They are the perfect architects for this franchise.”
“I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap,” added Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair. “They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join Monopoly with a clear point of view. We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster.”
“Monopoly is a top property — pun fully intended,” LuckyChap quipped. “Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”
