Movieguide® has been making great progress on its goal to redeem the media. There are major movies with strong Christian content, and there are more and more outright Christian movies being made, but the work of Movieguide® is far from finished.
The entertainment industry is changing. More and more media is being created that does not come to theaters or to the hundreds of television channels. Programs made and offered by streaming services are gaining popularity. They have no rating system and can be astoundingly offensive.
There is a tremendous need to redeem services like Netflix. One of their most recent programs is a cartoon show called BIG MOUTH. It features a demon getting a young boy to experience sexual gratification. It’s laced with vulgarity and is focused primarily on sex. The boy’s father is really offensive.
Netflix is highly regarded as an innovative company. Its statement of corporate values begins with a description of the “good” judgment they desire in their employees:
- You make wise decisions despite ambiguity
- You identify root causes, and get beyond treating symptoms
- You think strategically, and can articulate what you are, and are not, trying to do
- You are good at using data to inform your intuition
- You make decisions based on the long term, not near term
Let’s look at this policy in regard to BIG MOUTH.
You make wise decisions despite ambiguity
True wisdom comes from God. It fosters a culture more like heaven and less like hell. Wisdom encourages responsible, healthy behavior. BIG MOUTH does not. It encourages children to be obsessed with the sexual desires.
You identify root causes, and get beyond treating symptoms
The root cause of a great deal of misery on earth is children told they must pursue sexual gratification. When children are taught to see themselves as animals with sex drives they must gratify, horrible things happen.
You think strategically, and can articulate what you are, and are not, trying to do
Strategically BIG MOUTH seeks to mock good behavior and encourage bad behavior. A demon of lust is not a laughing matter.
You are good at using data to inform your intuition
The data on the impact of lust is massive but unnecessary. Intuition is all you need to realize that a demon of lust is not a wise thing to offer children.
You make decisions based on the long term, not near term
Movieguide® would advise Netflix to think about the long-term impact of promoting lust in children. In the near term, some subscribers may watch the program. In the long term, you could help create another customer for the sex trafficking industry.
What we at Movieguide® want is a world more like heaven. We want healthy marriages, loving families, and a society where people treat each other well.
We encourage Netflix to consider the long-term impact of the entertainment they offer. We imagine most of Netflix’s employees want to leave a better world for their children and grandchildren.
