New Animated GRINCH Remake Shows “The Redemptive Power of Forgiveness”

By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer

“You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch…”

The classic holiday tale By Dr. Seuss is getting an animated reboot just in time for the Christmas season. Illumination, the animation company that produced DESPICABLE ME and THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS, tackles the story about the misunderstood Grinch.

Benedict Cumberbatch (DOCTOR STRANGE, SHERLOCK) voices the title character whose heart is two or three “sizes too small…” depending on the movie. This go-round the team behind the project wanted to heavily focus on the theme of forgiveness.

Creators behind the new movie gathered recently to discuss their specific vision behind revamping Dr. Seuss’ work. Producer Janet Healy spoke about the messages at the heart of THE GRINCH, “It really speaks to what kindness means, and how joy and love and compassion are so important. Not only at Christmas, but for all of us, it’s a time to make the world a better place.”

She went on to detail that the movie showcases “the redemptive power of forgiveness.” What could be more appropriate than this around Christmas time?

The movie aims to stay faithful to Dr. Seuss’ children’s book, originally published in 1957. Yarrow Cheny, the movie’s co-director along with Colin Stimpson, art director for THE GRINCH, pulled images from the children’s book to make the screen come alive with familiarity to a whole new generation of viewers.

Each year, we celebrate Christmas to remember that Jesus humbled Himself to come to Earth on our behalf, suffer for our sins, and be raised again to life, and sit down to rule at the right hand of God. Christmas has fallen prey to commercialization and secularization in the U.S. for many, and if a movie like THE GRINCH, implores us to look at the meaning of the season and turn our eyes towards Jesus, we’re all for it.

Movieguide®’s full review of THE GRINCH will be available soon! Keep checking back to our website and social media for all the latest on the new movie.

In 2000, Jim Carrey played this green character under the direction of Ron Howard (CINDERELLA MAN), and before that, you may recall how Boris Karloff lent his talents to the animated Grinch story in its debut on screen. Re-runs of these two versions play continuously after Thanksgiving, but this year, Illumination’s THE GRINCH releases in theaters in early November.
