New PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Series in the Works at Netflix

Netflix is reportedly developing a new TV series based on Jane Austin’s classic, Pride and Prejudice.
The book is being adapted by Dolly Alderton, the author of Everything I Know About Love. Alderton is the only person currently attached to the project with no cast currently slotted for any role. Everything I Know About Love was previously adapted for the screen by both the BBC and Peacock.
Pride and Prejudice follows the story of Elizabeth Bennet, a poor girl who falls in love with the rich and proud Mr. Darcy. They find that love can overcome class and pride prejudice. The story is perhaps Jane Austin’s best-known work and has been adapted for the screen multiple times.
The best-known adaptation of the novel is the 2005 movie starring Kiera Knightly as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy.
Netflix has found repeated success with period dramas such as the extremely popular BRIDGERTON. The streamer has also adapted Austin’s work in the past; in 2022, Netflix released a movie adaptation of Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson.
Beyond Netflix, Austin’s work has become quite popular as the BBC announced a Pride and Prejudice spinoff series earlier this month following Janice Hadlow’s The Other Bennet Sister, which tells the story of Mary Bennet, Elizabeth’s sister. Additionally, Emerald Fennell is working on a retelling of Wuthering Heights starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
In 2023, Hallmark celebrates the works of Jane Austin through four Austin-inspired movies about her or her characters. Along with the release of these movies, the network launched an online book club to allows fans to discuss Austin’s legacy and what her stories have meant to them.
There is no public timeline for when Netflix’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE will be released.
