University of Montana basketball guard Money Williams lost both of his parents last year. Now he’s working to provide for his siblings.

“On November 29th, 2023, while I was away playing basketball in Reno, Nevada, I received the devastating news of my father’s passing,” the sophomore guard wrote on a GoFundMe page. “At just 18 years old, I was suddenly faced with the tough decision of whether to continue chasing my dreams or set them aside to support my family.”
“Now, just a year later, we’ve suffered another profound loss. Our mother, Latoya Bailey, peacefully passed away in her sleep on October 12th, 2024. This unexpected tragedy has left my siblings and me at a loss for words,” he added.
The athlete explained that he and his older sister, Mo’Ney, are now responsible for their three younger siblings: Joanna, Jermaine, and Jeremiah Benson. “The weight of this responsibility, coupled with our grief, is immense,” he wrote.
Williams had launched the GoFundMe before his team’s Nov. 13 face-off against Tennesse. At the time, he had raised $70,000 to help care for his little siblings.

But “After dropping 30 points against Tennessee, [Vols] fans found out about his story and quickly decided to donate,” Sports Center reported. “The number is now $135,000 and counting.”

The contributions made from the GoFundMe will help Williams and his sister:

1. Cover funeral expenses for our mother

2. Provide for our younger siblings’ immediate needs

3. Ensure stability as we adjust to our new family dynamic

4. Support educational expenses for all siblings

“We understand that times are tough for everyone, and there is no obligation to contribute,” he added. “However, any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated and will make a significant difference in our lives.

“To all the mothers out there who make sacrifices for their children: we see you, we appreciate you, and we love you. Your hard work does not go unnoticed,” the guard continued.
“Thank you for taking the time to read our story,” Williams concluded. “Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us during this heartbreaking time.”
