MONSTERS, INC. fans, rejoice! A third installment in the franchise is reportedly on the way.

“In a recent profile with The Wall Street Journal promoting Pixar‘s latest movie, HOPPERS, the publication revealed that the studio is developing a third MONSTERS, INC. film,” The Hollywood Reporter revealed

MONSTERS, INC. was released in 2001, following Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and John P. “Sully” Sullivan (John Goodman), two monsters who work at a power company that makes energy by scaring children. The movie would go on to gross over $528 million worldwide and generate a prequel, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, and a spin-off series, MONSTERS AT WORK.

No other details about the third MONSTERS, INC. movie were shared, but Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter, who directed the franchise’s first movie, told Entertainment Weekly in 2016, “You never say never — who knows what will happen?”

“We purposely went with a prequel for MONSTERS UNIVERSITY because we didn’t want to answer some of the questions about what happens to Boo, and how does she grow up, and things like that,” he explained. “It would have to be really compelling, which is hopefully the benchmark for all of our sequels, anyway.”

MONSTERS, INC. 3 isn’t the only exciting project Pixar has in the works. WSJ revealed the studio is also working on INCREDIBLES 3 and COCO 2.

INCREDIBLES star Holly Hunter told Screen Rant she would start recording her lines for the animated movie this month, adding, “I don’t know [anything about the plot]. I never do know.”

“I never know what the stories are of INCREDIBLES,” she continued. “I go in and I record with Brad [Bird, the movie’s writer]…so it’s very exciting.”

COCO 2 is in a later stage of development, but Disney’s CEO Bob Iger told company shareholders at a recent meeting, “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure.”

In a 2024 interview with Time, Docter spoke about how Pixar balances sequels of their popular movies with original stories.

“It’s hard,” he said. “Everybody says, ‘Why don’t they do more original stuff?’ And then when we do, people don’t see it because they’re not familiar with it. With sequels, people think, ‘Oh, I’ve seen that. I know that I like it.’ Sequels are very valuable that way.”

Docter added, “On the other hand, they’re almost harder than originals because we can’t do the same idea again. We have to build on it hopefully in ways that people don’t expect.”

Pixar fans can’t wait to see the latest installments of these popular movies!
