Rock Legend Alice Cooper Relies on This Biblical Truth

By Movieguide® Contributor

Rock legend Alice Cooper knows that none of us are deserving of God’s grace. In a video posted to Facebook, Cooper shared his thoughts on the matter.

“Well, none of us deserve redemption. But Christ on the cross… if that blood is the most precious thing, that is your redemption,” he began. “He was the perfect sacrifice. There is no sacrifice we could make that would be better than the son of God dying for you, understanding your sin, understanding that you’re going to sin after that, and yet still paying the price.”

Cooper continued by explaining this Gospel truth: we can’t save ourselves.

“You can’t do it. You can’t ever repay that, and once you realize that, then you are connected to the Lord. He has taken a residence in your life and now he’s with you at every moment. So, redemption is giving into that and saying ‘Lord, you’re right. Here I am,’” he said.

Cooper was raised in a Christian home but fell away as he grew up and became a rock star in the 60’s. His career was riddled with drugs and alcohol.

He previously shared his story in an interview with Newsweek. “My wife and I are both Christian. My father was a pastor, my grandfather was an evangelist. I grew up in the church, went as far away as I could from it—almost died—and then came back to the church.”

Cooper still plays for his band The Hollywood Vampires. He believes you can be a Christian and still play rock n roll.

“There’s nothing in Christianity that says I can’t be a rock star,” he said. “People have a very warped view of Christianity. They think it’s all very precise and we never do wrong and we’re praying all day and we’re right-wing. It has nothing to do with that.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Cooper’s faith and how it helped him overcome addiction:

Although Cooper’s alcoholism did not manifest itself with him getting angry or unable to complete his shows, it was killing him on the inside.

“Internally my pancreas and liver were being destroyed,” Cooper explained. “I woke up one morning and I threw up blood and that’s how I kind of knew it was over. My wife grabbed my ear and said, ‘Hey, the party’s over.’”

Cooper told Harvest Crusade’s Greg Laurie that his wife only took him back on the condition that he go to church.

“I knew that there had to either come a point where I either accepted Christ and started living that life, or, if I died in this, I was in a lot of trouble,” Cooper said. “That’s what really motivated me. I just got to a point of saying I’m tired of this life and I know that [God] is right. When the Lord opens your eyes and you suddenly realize who you are and who He is, oh, it’s a whole different world.”
