Russell Brand Interprets Important Bible Verse
By Movieguide® Contributor
Russell Brand is providing his interpretation of 1 Corinthians 6:19 and how important it is to take care of ourselves spiritually.
“‘Did you not know that your body is a temple?’” he asked followers in an Instagram video.
Brand is quoting 1 Corinthians 6:19: “What? Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God, and that you are not your own?”
“What I like about that is the interrogative — ‘did you not know?’” he continued. “When I saw it rendered, it was like this — ‘did you not know that your body is a temple?’ It was, like, a really gentle thing. It comes in Paul talking to the Corinthians. ‘Did you not know that body is a temple? What are you doing? Your body is a temple!’ Because they’re living in a really sexual, licentious culture. It’s amazing to me, especially when you equate it with…an Old Testament prescription.”
Brand explained that exact and specific requirements were given for building a temple, something we should keep in mind as we make our bodies temples.
“In the new covenant, when the body becomes the temple…perhaps we have to be equally specific,” he said. “If we are to make ourselves a dwelling place, a residence for God, then it’s the equivalent of six cubits this way, 20 cubits this way — we have to have the measurements correct. Otherwise, you may not receive the message.”
Brand recently found faith and has been sharing his journey on social media.
“I’ve been a Christian now for three months, and sometimes I find it quite difficult,” he said in a recent Instagram video. “What I mean by that is I feel like sometimes Christ is far away. I don’t feel the intimate connection with Christ.”
Brand continued, “I heard yesterday in church that even when I can’t feel God, God is working on me. God is working me into the shape that He needs me to be.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Brand’s faith:
Actor and comedian Russell Brand recently shared insights into his faith journey and need for God in his life.
For the actor, life’s challenges would be impossible to face without God.
“Like many desperate people, I need spirituality,” Brand told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson on TUCKER CARLSON TODAY. “I need God, or I cannot cope in this world. I need to believe in the best in people.”
As “atrophying and corrupt systems delivering yet more misery to people” continue to leave their mark on society, Brand believes that real cultural change will only come when people explore their hearts.
“I think it’s increasingly necessary that we find new ways of framing the conversation and looking into our hearts when we’re speaking,” he reflected.
“Are we being kind? Are we being loving? Are we being the best that we can be? On whose behalf are we speaking? And what is my intention, moment to moment? Am I doing this for self-glorification?”
“My worldview is formed by spiritual principles rather than political principles,” Brand explained.
“I never felt like I’m in alignment with my beliefs and principles in the way that I do right now,” he said. “I believe in truth and freedom and the ability to express yourself.”
