‘I Need God’: Actor Russell Brand Opens Up About Faith Journey

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actor and comedian Russell Brand recently shared insights into his faith journey and need for God in his life.

For the actor, life’s challenges would be impossible to face without God.

“Like many desperate people, I need spirituality,” Brand told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson on TUCKER CARLSON TODAY. “I need God, or I cannot cope in this world. I need to believe in the best in people.”

Brand admits that he “didn’t have enough self-discipline to resist the allure of stardom.”

“I fell face first into the glitter, and I’m only just pulling myself out now,” he added.

“As much as I might enjoy the feeling of privilege and luxury… I remember what reality is,” Brand continued.

“I remember that my wellness is contingent upon spiritual connection, upon certain values and principles, and they…involve sacrifice and self-scrutiny about my own conduct and behavior, which often falls short, and I’m working on improving myself.”

As “atrophying and corrupt systems delivering yet more misery to people” continue to leave their mark on society, Brand believes that real cultural change will only come when people explore their hearts.

“I think it’s increasingly necessary that we find new ways of framing the conversation and looking into our hearts when we’re speaking,” he reflected.

“Are we being kind? Are we being loving? Are we being the best that we can be? On whose behalf are we speaking? And what is my intention, moment to moment? Am I doing this for self-glorification?”

“My worldview is formed by spiritual principles rather than political principles,” Brand explained.

“I never felt like I’m in alignment with my beliefs and principles in the way that I do right now,” he said. “I believe in truth and freedom and the ability to express yourself.”

Brand and Carlson’s conversation spanned everything from the entertainment industry to the current political climate to Brand’s sobriety journey.

Movieguide® previously reported on Brand’s 20-year sobriety milestone:

Everyone needs a little help from their friends, and actor Russell Brand knows he is no exception.

The Hollywood actor recently took to Instagram to celebrate a huge milestone of 20 years of sobriety, that would not have been possible without a supportive community.

“I’m 20 years clean and sober today,” Brand said. “It’s December the 13th. So, firstly, I wanted to express my gratitude for all the people who have helped me to remain clean and sober. It is never done on your own.”….

He expressed that he wished to have “dominion over” himself in that area of his life, saying, “One day at a time, I’ll kick it out of my life.”

At the time, he expressed a certainly unpopular view of pornography and sex in general.

“Our attitudes toward sex have become warped and perverted and have deviated from its true function as an expression of love and a means for procreation because … the way we have designed and expressed it has become really, really confused,” Brand said.

As with porn, Brand says that overcoming drug and alcohol abuse is an “ongoing process.”
