Russell Wilson On Raising Children: ‘I Think We Gotta Coach Them Harder’

By Movieguide® Staff

NFL quarterback Russell Wilson is not afraid to encourage talents that he sees in his children.

The 10-year vet, who recently signed with the Denver Broncos, appeared on the “Youth Inc. with Greg Olsen” podcast, where he shared his philosophy on raising children.

Wilson and his wife Ciara share 20-month-old son Win Harrison, daughter Sienna Princess, 4, and son Future Zahir, 7, who Ciara had with ex Future.

“Future for example, he’s very talented. One of my pet peeves, with coaching kids these days, is like saying, ‘it’s okay to tie,’ ‘it’s okay to this, it’s okay to that,'” Wilson told PEOPLE. “Listen, I think it’s great for kids to get outside and if they don’t win, cool, great. But if a kid has a talent, like a special gift, it’s God-given, to me, it’s our requirement to coach them and to train them to be the best version of themselves.”

“If they mess up, coach them, right there,” Wilson, 33, said. “Don’t over coach them but give them some positive language, give them thoughts and give them some clear coaching points.”

Wilson said it is essential to exercise patience and not move on from a coachable moment because the child doesn’t understand.

“I cannot stand if my kids get a coaching lesson and they’re doing something wrong and it’s like, ‘Okay, next thing.’ No, we’re gonna fix it right,” Wilson said. “I firmly believe we’re just letting our kids get away with stuff nowadays. I think we gotta coach them harder.”

The career-long Seattle Seahawk also spoke about his future with his new team and the NFL in general.

“My goal is to play 10 or 12 more years and hopefully win three, four more Super Bowls, that’s the plan,” he said in March press conference. “That’s the mindset. That’s why I came here, to finish my career here and hopefully finish on top as a champion. And do it multiple times.”

Wilson is open about his Christian faith and how that motivates him in his relationship with his wife, parenting, and career on the field.

The eight-time Pro-Bowler encouraged his millions of followers to find peace in God via his social media accounts.

“What the Scripture says in Philippians 4:7, is the peace of God – the peace of God – that transcends all understanding. That’s the kind of peace that I want to have – the peace of God. I challenge us to try to search for that. And a lot of times what happens is that we run our own thoughts, our own ideas – we’re constantly thinking about what we want to do, how we want to fix it, how we want to handle this, and we want to do that.”

Wilson ended on a question, urging his followers to think about Christ.

“How about God, how about Jesus? What would He do? I think the biggest thing that we have to connect to is the promise of God,” Wilson said. “Actually, reading the Scripture and understanding what He wants for us and what He wants for me. I know for me personally, that’s what I’ve been working on. Not trying to find my own peace. I want the peace of God.”
