You don’t have to be an influencer with millions of followers or a reality TV star to make a lasting impression, just as Sadie Robertson Huff learned from a recent encounter at a restaurant.

“I’m at lunch for the day with our family. Honey…asked me earlier if she could get a lemonade, which [I] pretty much only let her order water at restaurants, and so this was a big deal for her, so I ordered the lemonade for her,” Huff recalled.

The waiter accidentally brought water instead, and when the mom of three reminded him about the lemonade, he recognized her but not for the reason she thought.

“He’s like, ‘That’s where I know you from.’ And nine times out of 10, they’re about to say, ‘Oh, I recognize you from social media, from your podcast, from DANCING WITH THE STARS, DUCK DYNASTY,’” the podcaster said.

But actually, the waiter remembered Huff from years ago when she came to the restaurant and there was a similar beverage mishap.

“[H]e said, ‘In the most kind and graceful and polite way, you asked me to bring you another one,’” Huff said. “He didn’t recognize me from anything else, other than a tone that I had in my voice. I thought, man, like that is what I want to be recognized for.”

The exchange with the waiter made her realize how we can “underestimate and undervalue the power” of our words.

“Man, what if, like, your seeds of kindness today actually impact someone so profoundly that they recognize you years later,” she said.

Huff added, “Hope you recognize the nature of Jesus through those moments. I just encourage you today lean into the tone of Jesus and sow those seeds in people’s lives, so that when they see Jesus in other things, they go,’Oh, I recognize that.”

The DUCK DYNASTY star also addressed the importance of the image that we present in public, versus who we are when people aren’t looking.

“Right now we’re in a season where we’re filming a show, and when the camera is on, whether you mean to or not, you act better, you know,’ Huff said on her “Whoa That’s Good” podcast. “And I was like… ‘Lord, I don’t want to get that way in my walk with you. I don’t want to, like, know how to turn it on.’”

“Because the Pharisees knew what to say. And that verse was so convicting to me. I read it, and it was like, Jesus said, do what the Pharisees say, but don’t live the way that they live,” she went on to say.

This principle coincides with the scripture that says to seek to please God above men. Colossians 3:23-24 reads: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
