Should Christians Boycott SNOW WHITE?

The live-action remake of SNOW WHITE has been marred in controversy for years, however, Christians should support the moral story, rather than allow the critiques of the lead, Rachel Zegler, push them away.

SNOW WHITE had an abysmal opening weekend, bringing in only $42 million at the domestic box office on a movie that cost at least $270 million to make. Furthermore, SNOW WHITE is one of Disney’s most iconic movies, so the remake should have easily been one of the top movies of the year — not a flop. However, it almost seems like Zegler wanted to sabotage the movie as she made multiple comments criticizing the story while also alienating a large portion of the American audience.

“I just mean that it’s no longer 1937,” Zegler said in 2023, criticizing the original main themes of the movie. “[Snow White’s] not going out to be saved by the prince and she’s not going to go dreaming about true love. He’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her she could be if she was fearless, brave and true.”

Since then, potential viewers began viewing the movie as a woke reproduction of the original. This was further enforced by the removal of the song “Some Day My Prince Will Come” while also reworking some of the characters. In October 2023, The Daily Wire even announced it would be releasing its own live-action version of the movie that emphasized the traditional values in order to combat Disney’s twisted version.

However, Disney’s SNOW WHITE actually remained true to many of the original themes and is actually much more Christian and traditional than many might think. For example, the movie teaches the values of doing the right thing, inner beauty, freedom, honesty, sincerity, sacrifice and standing up to tyranny. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

SNOW WHITE has a few storytelling hiccups and uneven moments, plus two or three scenes that probably will scare older pre-teenage children too much. However, it’s a delightful, funny, exciting, and wholesome movie with good performances and good singing. It also has a strong Christian, moral, conservative, patriotic, pro-capitalist worldview with some Christian allusions. For example, SNOW WHITE supports true love, doing the right thing, letting goodness be your guide, inner beauty, freedom, honesty, sincerity, sacrifice, and bravely standing up to tyranny. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older pre-teenage children.

While audiences should consider who they support when they attend a movie, more importantly, they should consider the message they put their money behind. SNOW WHITE is a strongly Christian movie that, although modernized, teaches similar values to the original. Thus, Christians should not let Zegler tank the film through her vocal criticism, but, rather, should support this movie and encourage Disney to continue to focus on stories that teach traditional values.
