THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE continues to dominate at the box office, earning the best Monday year-to-date at the US box office.
“After posting the best opening weekend and five-day frame of 2026, Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE hasn’t let up, charting the best Monday year-to-date at the U.S. box office with $16.8 million,” Deadline reported.
So far, the movie’s total take stands at $207.6 million after just six days in theaters. THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE has had the biggest opening weekend for a movie so far this year and boasts the second-highest global opening for Illumination of all-time, behind only THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE.

“This extraordinary weekend underscores the amazing partnership between Nintendo and Illumination, and the enduring strength of Mario and his pals,” Jim Orr, president of Domestic Theatrical Distribution for Universal Pictures, said in a statement about the movie’s opening. “THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE feels bigger and more ambitious, with audiences clearly embracing this next evolution of their world.”
AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron also weighed in on the sequel’s success, saying, “It’s exactly the kind of broad, crowd-pleasing release that brings people into theatres.”
THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is a hit with audiences and critics alike. Movieguide®’s review praises the “funny, eye-popping series of rousing set pieces,” as well as the “amazing variety of colorful, fantastic sets and characters” and “strong moral worldview with some redemptive content.”
“These kind of audience reaction scores just point to a ridiculously strong run, not only throughout the spring, but likely into the summer as well,” Orr said of the movie’s success.
Nintendo designer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri spoke to Polygon about what they hope audiences take away from the movie.
Meledandri mentioned the “element of surprise” and “parts that really surprise you and that you find delight in the unexpected,” while Miyamoto spoke about the family aspect.
“The…thing that I would love for people to do is to actually go to the theater as a family,” he shared. “I always say, ‘Please cheer Mario on as a whole family.’ This idea of a child going to the theater with their parents, that becomes a talking point for them with their friends or with their family. So I would love to see this expand within the family.”
THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE’s continued box office success is proof that family-friendly movies will always win audiences over.
