Tauren Wells Reflects on God’s Guidance: ‘We Need His Voice’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian singer Tauren Wells reflected on his life and career as a Christian artist in a recent “Jesus Calling” episode, sharing how he has seen God work and what it means to follow Christ.

Wells grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan, and his love for music began as a child.

“As we started going to church, I started listening to more and more gospel music and leading gospel music,” he shared. “That’s what my church did. So we sang songs by Donald Lawrence and Fred Hammond, Israel Houghton, you know, things like that. And so there was like a funk element and a jazz element to gospel roots. And then, of course, those same roots exist in pop and R&B music.”

Wells recalled his first experience in a choir at age nine. He often sang louder than everyone else, and “One day the choir director actually stopped the rehearsal and said, ‘Tauren, I don’t think you understand the point of a choir. You’re supposed to sing your part and blend in with everyone else. This is not a solo, so chill.’”

Wells continued to write songs and attended Indiana Bible College, where he studied theology and music and met his wife.

Today, Wells tours, spreading God’s love through music.

“We know that the joy of the Lord’s supposed to be our strength, but you can only be serious about God and being in God’s presence. If in His presence there is fullness of joy, why can’t we do things that demonstrate joyfulness like smiling, laughing, dancing and celebrating? And so that’s a part of what I do,” he explained.

Despite his success, Wells continues to rely on God.

“I want people to be able to engage with the voice of God every day. We need His voice. We need His voice, we need to be able to hear Him when He speaks, when He corrects, when He encourages, when He leads, we have to be able to listen.”

Wells and his wife recently announced that they are following God’s leading and will be leaving their church in Houston to plant a church in Austin, Texas.

“Well, our party of six, is setting out on the adventure of a lifetime, packing up our lives in Houston, and following our calling to love, serve, and inspire the city and surrounding communities of north Austin, Texas,” Wells shared in an Instagram post.

“Through the planting of a vibrant, life-giving, community of faith, Church of Whitestone, we are assuming our calling as Lead Pastors of the church that God placed in our heart more than 10 years ago. The vision is clear, ‘helping people discover their God-authored identity through wholehearted relationship with Jesus,’ and the time is now,” he concluded his post.

Movieguide® previously reported on Wells:

Christian artist and worship leader Tauren Wells is sharing his thoughts on worship music today, as well as what he wants listeners to take away from his music.

“We just have not done a very good job of leading from our weaknesses, from leading from our wounds,” Wells explained, referring to people’s preference of putting on a fake image, rather than appearing vulnerable.

Wells shared that he feels this also comes across in Christian music, as well.

“Most Christian songs that you hear, it’s resolved in three minutes or less. You’re at the absolute bottom, and it doesn’t seem like there’s any way out – but then, by the end, life is amazing, and Jesus is good,” he explained.
