The Bible is Transforming Gen Z

The American Bible Society reports that 54% of Gen Z say the Bible has transformed their lives.

“The State of the Bible report found that more Gen Z adults say the Bible has impacted their lives than in 2023, up 4% from the previous year,” Relevant reported.

This contradicts other studies that say Gen Z is the least religious generation ever and most likely to identify as atheist or agnostic.

“According to the American Survey Center, more than one-third (34%) of Gen Z is religiously unaffiliated (‘Nones’), a significantly larger proportion than other generations,” Relevant said.

Relevant added, “One thing to note in the ABS study is that the organization only surveyed Gen Zers ages 18 to 27. That means younger Gen Zers could have a major shift on their generation’s religious makeup. Only time will tell.”

ABS’s data was retrieved from 2,506 online interviews with adults across the U.S. and the District of Columbia.

The study also found that Black Americans are the most engaged with scripture and attend church the most.

Movieguide® reported on data about Gen Z and the Bible last year:

The 2023 State of the Bible report shows that Gen Z is still interested in learning about faith, though the number of those willing to do so is declining.

“The majority (56%) of younger Gen Z adults (ages 18-21) reported being curious about Jesus and/or the Bible, whereas only 34% of older Gen Z adults (22-26) said so,” the report revealed. “These percentages are down from 2022 when around 77% of all Gen Z adults showed curiosity in Scripture.”

While the interest in faith is trending negative, the data shows that Gen Z is more interested in the Bible than the general population may think.

Another recent study found that 44% of Gen Z adults were “extremely curious about the Bible and/or Jesus.” Adults ages 18-21 were more curious than those aged 22-26. So it may be the younger Gen Zers who have more openness to faith.

The Gospel Coalition also observed Gen Z’s curiosity about the Bible and said this:

If we want Gen Zers to know the truth, we must be willing to teach all of it. Doing so will mean we have many difficult conversations. It’ll require wisdom, patience, and grace as we navigate their doubts and fears. We’ll need to be honest about the cost of following Jesus—and dare to discuss the cost of not following Jesus…

We’re hopeful for this next generation. They’re spiritually open, curious, starved for deep connection, and craving a sense of belonging that we believe only Jesus can meet. Raising up the next generation will take the whole church not just seeing past these obstacles but meeting Gen Zers in them to bring about the transformative power of God’s grace in their lives.

…They want the truth. Will we help them find it?
