“The Bible Recap” host Tara-Leigh Cobble explained how her podcast is designed to help people see the beauty of God through the Bible, rather than looking for a checklist to make Him happy.
“You don’t leave The Bible Recap with a moral task list,” Cobble explained. “You leave with awe. You leave knowing who God is.”
This approach to Bible reading has been extremely popular, as the podcast regularly ranks as one of the most popular Christian podcasts, while also being one of the most popular podcasts across all genres. She had the idea to help people walk through the Bible in this way after experiencing the impact this change had in her own relationship with the Lord.
After growing up heavily involved in the church, Cobble thought she knew the Bible and who the Lord was. However, after getting burnt out on ministry, a friend of hers challenged her to read the Bible cover to cover and see who God reveals Himself to be through His word, rather than who she thought He was.
“‘Stop looking for yourself and start looking for God…’” Cobble recalled her friend telling her. “It transformed everything, to have this whole new lens to read scripture through. I had always been looking for myself in scripture. ‘What are the promises? What are the things I can cling to to back God into a corner? How can I please God? How can I be a good Christian?’ And to read it to understand who He is, that was my aha moment.”
She spent decades in the church and even taking on leadership roles before truly understanding who God is. Now Cobble hopes that her podcast can help others skip those years of pain and confusion and seek God first from the start, rather than using Christianity to serve themselves. She pursues this goal by helping readers stay focused on the big picture and highlighting what each Bible story says about God, rather than what the Bible’s lessons mean for us.

“You’re not reading to get your to-do list. You’re not reading to find out how to be a better Christian or a better wife or girlfriend or mother. You’re not reading it to find out how to make God happy with you and show you favor. You’re reading it to get to know who God is,” Cobble said.
“Remember, we’re not here to be entertained. Scripture isn’t here to entertain us,” she added. “Scripture is here to reveal God. So where in today’s reading did we see God’s character show up? What do we learn about Him by what He told us in His word today? So every day I’m pointing to that.”
Her work continues to change millions of people’s lives as they come to know the Lord better by focusing on Him instead of on themselves.
