The Emmys Reveal New Rules Ahead Of 2023 Ceremony

The Emmys have revealed new rules and categories ahead of the 2023 award show season.
There has been a lot of conversation surrounding two Emmy categories — Outstanding Variety Talk Show and Outstanding Variety Sketch Show.
The reasons? Most talk shows are either news-focused or entertainment-oriented, with a variety show feel. It feels unreasonable to pit such different types of shows against each other.
As for the sketch show category — there are now so few sketch shows on TV that it seems silly to have a whole category at the Emmys for the few that are left.
It looks like the organization has come to an agreement on how to end the controversy — get rid of them.
Both categories will be replaced with Outstanding Talk Series and Outstanding Scripted Variety Series.
The Outstanding Talk Series category will select shows that feature “unscripted interviews or panel discussions between a host/hosts and guest celebrities or personalities.”
The Outstanding Scripted Variety Series will honor “programs that are primarily scripted or feature loosely scripted improv and consist of discrete scenes, musical numbers, monologues, comedy stand-ups, sketches, etc.”
Of course, this starts a whole new conversation as to which shows should go in what category.
For example, THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JIMMY FALLON could go in either one, as it features unscripted interviews, but also musical performances and skits that make it more like a variety show.
These aren’t the only changes the Emmys are making.
Per Variety, when voting on who should be nominated, voters have a cap. Before, they could select an unlimited number of shows that might receive a nomination.
Additionally, line producers will now be eligible for nomination in variety categories, game shows will be featured at the Primetime Emmys, and only episodes that are available by May 31 will be eligible for nomination.
