THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE Breaks International Box Office Record

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE broke an international box office record in Japan. The movie, which contains a strong moral, biblical worldview, appeals to children and adults alike.

The film debuted in Japan on April 28 and after just 31 days the film hit $71 million in box office revenue. Which was the quickest non-Japanese animation creation on the Japanese market.

The film currently ranks as third all-time at the worldwide box office for animated films. THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE sits behind FROZEN and FROZEN II.

Part of Movieguide®’s review of the film reads

HE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE (2023) has a strong moral message about brotherhood, sacrifice, and working together to overcome evil. The movie has breathtaking animation that honors its iconic source material while breathing new life into the large cast of characters from both Mario video games and other Nintendo games of the same universe. For Mario and Luigi, love for one another helps them overcome their deepest fears and stand up against Bowser and his army of Koopas, Goombas, and Piranha Plants. Due to some intense animated action/violence, Movieguide® advises caution for younger children.

Movieguide® recently reported on the film reaching $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide:

The global box office ticket sales for SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE reached $1 billion this past weekend. Now being the 10th animated film to hit the $1 billion mark in the entire world.

Japan displayed the film across 776 screens to reach a gigantic $14.5 million which resulted in the biggest debut weekend for an animated film in Universal history. To top it all off, the film scored an additional biggest Saturday box office also in Universal history.

SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIES already sailed to the No. 1 released film of 2023 in the world. However, reaching $1 billion means that the film is the biggest animated title in the world since 2019. In addition, the film is Universal’s No. 3 biggest animated creations of all time sitting just behind MINIONS and DESPICABLE ME 3.
