Moviegoers across the country are in for special treats when they attend theaters on Jan. 19 and reap the benefits of attending a movie on National Popcorn Day.

“National Popcorn Day is one of those moments that reminds us why people love going to the movies,” said Michael O’Leary, President and CEO of Cinema United. “It’s about sharing a big screen experience and enjoying the amazing combination of movies and popcorn together that you simply can’t replicate anywhere else.”

The promotions available that day will include Bring Your Own Bucket at Cinemark theaters — where attendees can fill any container they bring with popcorn for only $5 — and a free large popcorn at all Marcus Theaters. Both theater chains are also offering visitors a variety of popcorn-themed games and experiences where they can win even more prizes to redeem at future visits.

Popcorn remains one of the most popular concessions across the theater industry, and a study revealed that 96% of moviegoers purchase some item from the concessions when they attend a movie.

While National Popcorn day officially started in the 1970s, it has not become a real celebration until recently as theaters look for ways to draw audiences back and remind them why the theatrical experience is so powerful. Previous years have seen similar deals as this year’s lineup, and executives have shared their enthusiasm for having a way to engage with their patrons.

“Delicious buttery popcorn is one of the most quintessential components of the theatrical experience, and we are delighted to provide our guests with multiple ways to celebrate the beloved snack on National Popcorn Day,” David Hollywood, Cinemark’s SVP Food & Beverage, said last year. “Not only can moviegoers partake in special discounts and sweepstakes surrounding the holiday while taking in a great film on our massive screens, but our recent expansion with third-party delivery platforms will allow popcorn fans the chance to enjoy the delectable treat from their homes if they are unable to make it to the theater.”

The success of National Popcorn Day has also inspired theaters to pursue other promotions to continue to draw audiences in. Last year the Cinema Foundation promoted four separate occasions where moviegoers can get a better bang from their buck while attending the movies.

“Cinemas are an indispensable part of our culture. These celebrations emphasize the power of moviegoing to bring us all together to share and create long-lasting memories with our friends, families, and community,” Mike Bowers, Chair of the Cinema Foundation said, explaining why he works to keep the theater business alive.

National Popcorn Day is a fun way to engage with theaters and enjoy a movie while chowing down on its most popular pairing. The holiday will be celebrated at theaters across the nation on Jan. 19.
