After a 16-year hiatus, SCRUBS will make its return to ABC beginning February 25, 2026.
According to Collider, SCRUBS will take the spot of Tim Allen’s and Kat Dennings’ SHIFTING GEARS show, “which will conclude its 13-episode second-season order in February.”
SCRUBS will bring back many of the previous cast members like “Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley. Bill Lawrence, who created the series, will executive produce. The series was originally set to have co-showrunners in the form of Tim Hobert (THE MIDDLE) and Aseem Batra (THE CLEVELAND SHOW); however, Hobert recently departed the series over creative differences, leaving Batra as the show’s sole showrunner.”

Lawrence spoke with TV Line in June and discussed how the reboot is about JD and BFF Turk.
“I hate the narrative, like, ‘Oh, the ninth year sucked.’ No, it didn’t,” Lawrence addressed. “It’s sour grapes, whatever, I’m so lucky to have done it. I didn’t get to work on [that season] as much, but that writing staff did a great job, and I think Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, Eliza Coupe and Dave Franco have all gone on to have great careers because they were really good. If it had been a spinoff called Scrubs: Med or Scrubs: Med School, it would not have been judged as harshly, but I understand the business of that [decision]. This one is also called SCRUBS, and it starts with JD and Turk.”
“The hardest part is that Zach and Donald have aged,” the EP says with a laugh. “People still have that affinity, and love, for that goofy youthfulness — it’s why the T-Mobile commercials work so well,” Lawrence added. “To see what that [friendship] looks like at their age, and [take] a comedic look at what medicine has become since those kids started out as interns, and see how our people would look at it, deal with it, and try to remain optimistic,” is the whole plotline of the reboot, the executive producer said.
Lawrence still uses the “real JD [Dr. Jonathan Doris], who is “still the medical advisor on the show, and still a cardiologist and a heart surgeon in L.A.”
SCRUBS will return to ABC beginning February 25, 2026. This time, the series will focus on the cast outside of med school and well into adulthood. Mainly, the plotline will highlight the relationship between Braff and Faison, which has continued since the original SCRUBS debuted sixteen years ago.
