‘This Industry Wasn’t Healthy’: Why Chris Evans Left Hollywood

By Movieguide® Contributor

Chris Evans has joined the list of celebrities who have recently chosen to leave Los Angeles.

“[It] takes me back to a place when life was not just simpler — that’s too reductive — but to a time where I was more pure, I guess; where my ego and my insecurities weren’t such a dominant force that I had to push against,” Evans said in a GQ interview about his move to New England.

He shared that he moved out of L.A. after finishing production on AVENGERS: ENDGAME, in which he portrayed Captain America.

Evans also explained that part of the reason he decided to move back to his native New England was because of the “Pavlovian anxiety” he felt about living in Hollywood.

“I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, ‘Is this what I should be doing?’” the actor said.

He continued, “I just wasn’t sure if I was moving closer to myself or further away. And something inside me kept saying that I was getting further away—that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.”

Evans revealed that he plans to take a step back from acting.

“I could just make furniture for nobody and be happy,” he said. “I don’t want to—I’ve got to frame this the right way. I was going to say, I don’t want to waste too much time in this industry, but that doesn’t really feel…That doesn’t sound correct. I don’t want to occupy too much space in an industry that I’ve already poured 20 years into.”

The CAPTAIN AMERICA star now prefers to spend his time at his Massachusetts home with his new wife, Alba Baptista.

An inside source close to the couple revealed, “They spend most of their time at his place in Massachusetts and love the quiet life there, surrounded by nature and away from the spotlight.”

In a 2022 interview, Evans shared his thoughts on building a family.

“That’s absolutely something I want,” he told People. “Wife, kids, building a family. When you read about most of the best artists, whether it’s actors, painters, writers, most of them [admit] it wasn’t the work they made [that they are most proud of], it was about the relationships, the families they created, the love they found, the love they shared. So it’s also something through my long 41 years that also rings true. Those things are the most important. I love the idea of tradition and ceremony, I had a lot of that in my life so the idea of creating that, I can’t think of anything better.”
