TikTok’s New Policy to Ban ‘Problematic’ Content From Users’ For You Pages

TikTok has announced plans to block accounts that post “problematic” content from users’ For You pages.

“Certain types of content may be fine if seen occasionally, but problematic if viewed in clusters,” TikTok wrote in a recent update post. “This includes content such as dieting, extreme fitness, sexual suggestiveness, sadness (such as statements of hopelessness, or sharing sad quotes), and overgeneralized mental health information.”

The statement continued, “We maintain content eligibility standards for the FYF that prioritize safety and are informed by the diversity of our community and cultural practices. While the spontaneity of the FYF is what makes TikTok unique, it is intended for a range of audiences that includes everyone from teenagers to great grandparents. We make ineligible for the FYF, and may also make harder to find in search, certain content that may not be suitable for a broad audience.”

Adam Presser, TikTok’s head of operations and trust and safety, also spoke about the new safety policy, saying, “We’re introducing a policy to make an entire account temporarily ineligible for recommendation in the For You feed if a creator repeatedly posts content that goes against our For You feed standards.”

Per Variety, “In addition, such accounts will be harder to find in search. TikTok ‘will notify creators when their account has been restricted in this way, and they will be able to appeal,’ he added. Under TikTok’s policies, content created by anyone under 16 years old is ineligible for the For You feed.”

The Verge hypothesized that these changes might be in response to the potential TikTok ban, writing, “TikTok is taking more drastic action now to improve its public image.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the proposed ban:

The House passed a bill Wednesday morning that could effectively ban TikTok in the United States.

The legislation, called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, demands that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, divest the platform. If it doesn’t within 180 days, the app would be banned in American app stores.

CNBC reports that it received bipartisan support, passing with a 352-65 vote.

TikTok’s new content policy will go into effect on May 17.
