Tim Allen Feels Like This Football Legend as He Gets Ready for TV Comeback

By Movieguide® Contributor

Tim Allen compared his instant success returning to TV after over 10 years to that of Tom Brady returning to football after retiring.

Tim Allen is getting ready to return to TV, and he feels like Tom Brady returning to football after retiring.

“I’m still thinking about LAST MAN STANDING,” Allen told US Weekly. “They did that one for nine years, and now I feel like Tom Brady. I’m doing another one.”

After Allen’s first show, HOME IMPROVEMENT, ended in 1999, Allen wasn’t seen on TV until 2011 when he picked up the lead role on LAST MAN STANDING, which ran until 2021. The next year, he reprised his role as Santa Claus when Disney rolled THE SANTA CLAUSE movie franchise into an original show for Disney+. Now, he is looking forward to his fourth show, SHIFTING GEARS, which will follow a similar format to his first two.

“I’m very grateful to be working, being able to entertain. That’s what I love to do,” Allen said, adding about his new show, “It’s been a tremendous experience. Our pilot killed [it], so they’ve ordered a season, and we’ve been shooting it for about four days.”

Much like his other shows, SHIFTING GEARS centers around a family and the funny, insane circumstances of life.

Allen stars as Matt, “a widowed owner of a car restoration shop, and his attempts at reconnecting with his estranged daughter (Kat Dennings), who, along with her two teenage children, moves into Matt’s home.”

Other cast members include Seann William Scott as Gabriel, “a family friend who works in Matt’s shop,” and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch, “a former Marine who works as a mechanic for Matt. Playing Riley’s kids (and Matt’s grandchildren) are Maxwell Simkins…and newcomer Barrett Margolis.”

Allen’s emphasis on family experiences comes from being a part of a large family in real life.

“I’ve been defined by a very big, large family. My wife Jane’s got a large family, and now we have two [kids],” Allen said. “My life has been defined by my family. Every story I do on stage, playing comedy for 40 years [and my] stand-up is really centered around my family.”

SHIFTING GEARS is set to release in early 2025.
