TobyMac Says God is ‘There With Us in the Hardest Things’
By Movieguide® Contributor
TobyMac is encouraging people to trust in God, even in their darkest moments.
“It was just trusting God and telling Him I’m upset,” the artist explained during an episode of “The Holy Mess” podcast. “He began to talk to me, and He began to show me things about Him that I had never known before.”
TobyMac lost his son Truett in 2020, and the grief caused the Christian artist to struggle with his faith.
“I came to realize that when you’re reaching up for these promises, when you’re just trying to hold on, sometimes you reach up and you grab onto something that God didn’t ever promise you,” he explained. “I realized that when I reached up for the promise that He really did make in the end, and that was that He would never leave me or forsake me.”
The rapper continued, “He’s there with us, in the coldest things and the hardest things and the most painful things.”
Movieguide® previously reported on how the artist and his family have continued to deal with their loss:
In his honor, TobyMac established the Truett Foster Foundation, which has already helped three young men through college with scholarships.
“We’re not scared to talk about it. It’s not a taboo subject. It’s something beautiful. [We have] the faith to believe, is Truett laughing at this right now? Is he saying, ‘Come on Dad, give him a break’ when I’m hard on his little brother? All that has been really good for us,” he said. “He’s part of an ongoing conversation. We meet every year at the park across the street where we had his service, and we tell stories about him — things he had done or said or made us laugh or when he was a bad boy or when he was so kindhearted. We remember him all the time.”
Speaking about his grief to Christian Headlines, TobyMac said, “Everybody grieves differently.”
“The only advice I would have is you might question God’s sovereignty,” he continued. “And I think you need to — I think you need to figure out that God gives and takes away, and you have to be okay with that. And once you’re okay with that, I think your faith actually increases greatly. I found myself to be closer to God in the last three years than I ever have in my life. And I wouldn’t wish it on anybody, of course, but I had to figure out and really believe that God is sovereign, and I had to trust that and then look for Him in the hard places — like really look, and He’s there. That’s the thing — He’s there.”
Today, TobyMac is preparing to hit the road on the “Hits Deep Tour,” which will begin Jan. 26.
“Hits Deep Tour is my favorite time of the year,” he shared. “Not only do I get to see the people in over 30 states but I get to hang out backstage with some of my favorite artists. It’s a diverse night of music that hits deep featuring six different artists and their music. The songs people know and sing along with because they were played on radio, hit songs all night long.”
