Tom Selleck Turns 80. What’s Next for the Star?

By Movieguide® Contributor

Tom Selleck has enjoyed a long career in Hollywood, and he has no plans of stepping back even as he becomes an octogenarian.

Selleck, who turned 80 on Wednesday, has been a Hollywood mainstay for over 45 years. From his breakout role in MAGNUM P.I. to his long-standing anchor as Frank Reagan in BLUE BLOODS, the actor has graced fans with thousands of hours of entertainment.

The actor took it easy when it came to celebrating, though.

“I’ll probably have dinner with maybe my brother and my sister and Jillie, just go out to dinner, kind of be quiet, and not make a big deal of it,” he said of his birthday. “I’m trying not to count. I stopped celebrating birthdays a while back. I intend to keep working.”

As he enters into his later years, Selleck hopes to continue with his acting career, though he is not sure where it will take him next.

“I don’t know where my next job will take me,” Selleck, who turned 80 on Wednesday, told Parade in December. “People ask, ‘What do you want to do next?’ I’m not sure. I don’t want to do Frank Reagan II. A good Western’s always on my list. I miss that; I want to sit on a horse again.”

Perhaps this desire will take him down roads he has not gone in a while, such as his character Jesse Stone, who is less known but beloved by fans of the franchise.

“It would be an interesting challenge because Jesse is older now,” Selleck said. “They’ve been quite a few years between shows. That doesn’t mean he isn’t a viable character. Everywhere I go, one of the things I get asked is, ‘When can I see another JESSE STONE?’”

The actor is also open to genres he has rarely explored, such as comedies.

“I would love to do another comedy,” he said. “The right kind of comedy. FRIENDS made people laugh and cry at times. That’s the right kind of comedy I enjoy doing. THREE MEN AND A BABY had that too.”

While Selleck doesn’t have any roles currently lined up, he is still living a full life. He is completely committed to his family and enjoys his time on his farm away from Hollywood.

“It took me a long time to get off the [entertainment] train, but I try very hard to have a balance, and this ranch has helped me do that,” Selleck said, adding, “I’ve probably planted a thousand trees myself.”
