Shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton knows why her story of perseverance has motivated so many — it’s because she never lost hope and trust in God throughout her trials.
“I think a lot of times people are drawn to our stories because they’re facing hardship and challenge and they see what we have done. Like we’ve kept going. We’ve overcome,” she explained to speaker and pastor Nick Vujicic, whose story has inspired many as he’s conquered the challenge of having no limbs.
Hamilton herself lost a limb when a shark bit off her arm while she was surfing as at 13 years old.
Hamilton believes people want to have the same tenacity as she and Vujicic do. Young people especially look for deep and hopeful things that push them toward something meaningful.
“I think…I am a hint of hope and a hint of light and I’m pointing back to God, the creator and the author and finisher of our faith,” she explained. “And that’s our solution. That’s what we need.”
Because so many people feel so much disruption and concern, they need something that they can cling to—and that’s faith, truth and hope in Jesus.
“Even when we’re struggling inside or out, that’s where God is there for us through it all. He wants to be by our side,” she shared.
Vujicic will tell his story of struggling with suicidal thoughts as a child to becoming a world-renowned inspiration in his movie, NO LIMBS, NO LIMITS, which premieres in theaters on Sep. 25.
“Just because you are a Christian,” Vujicic said, “doesn’t mean that once you’re a Christian, you’re never depressed — there are always times where you have thoughts where you feel like, ‘I don’t want to keep going.’”
He battled with suicidal thoughts as a young person, but he realized that if he ended his life, he would leave behind a dark hole. His family would be in pain, and he didn’t want that for them. Then, he started praying for a miracle, but that didn’t happen.
Vujicic realized “The greatest miracle of all that I’ll ever receive in my life is my soul being saved, me being filled with the Holy Spirit, having a relationship with Jesus while I abide in Him, and He abides in me.”
As he grew closer to Christ, he began to also realize the impact his life had. Since then, Vujicic has used his story to bring hope to others all over the globe. In 2023, The Christian Post reported that Vujacic had made over 3,500 speeches across 78 countries, and has reached 2.8 billion people on TV.
Praise God for Hamilton’s and Vujicic’s faithfulness.
