Why Mark Wahlberg Stars in Inspirational Movies: They ‘Resonate’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Mark Wahlberg shared with Movieguide® at the ARTHUR THE KING red carpet why he makes movies that inspire his viewers.

“Those [films] are always the ones that resonate best with the audience,” Wahlberg told Movieguide®’s Jeremy Carroll. “Those are the ones that I get the most fulfillment out of, and those are the kind of movies that have always inspired me and encouraged me to do more, to be better, to get active.”

“I’ve felt like sometimes we just like…to laugh, to cry and to be inspired, [and] that’s the ultimate goal of filmmaking for me,” he continued.

Based on a true story, ARTHUR THE KING highlights the incredible bond between a man and his dog.

“Over the course of ten days and 435 miles, an unbreakable bond is forged between pro adventure racer Michael Light (Mark Wahlberg) and a scrappy street dog companion dubbed Arthur. Based on an incredible true story, ARTHUR THE KING follows Light, desperate for one last chance to win, as he convinces a sponsor to back him and a team of athletes (Simu Liu, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Ali Suliman) for the Adventure Racing World Championship in the Dominican Republic. As the team is pushed to their outer limits of endurance in the race, Arthur redefines what victory, loyalty and friendship truly mean,” a synopsis of the film reads.

Within the movie, there is a “combination of so many things, right? You know human perseverance and hope and teamwork and then also man’s best friend and how important that relationship is,” Wahlberg said.

The actor even forged a bond with his canine co-star.

“Oh my God, I tried to bribe the trainer to sell me the dog,” Wahlberg told PEOPLE. “I offered her whatever she would want. But, of course, that bond is not something that you can separate. I just fell in love with him.”

“I was amazed by how close we got and our connection. So, of course, I wanted him,” he added.

ARTHUR THE KING is set to hit the big screen on March 15.

Movieguide® previously reported on Wahlberg:

Mark Wahlberg says that all of his “personal and professional success” has been because of his faith.

“[My faith] has been very real to me from a very early age,” the actor said in an interview with Eric Metaxas. “I accredit all my personal and professional success to my faith.”

Wahlberg continued, “When I started doing good things, good things started happening for me.”

The FATHER STU actor also shared his future plans for more faith-based projects.

“I definitely am committed to and looking forward to doing more faith-based content and more stuff that just has substance and helps people,” Wahlberg said, adding that he’s “hoping to start a faith-based component and do lots of meaningful stuff — both film [and] television.”
