Why This Nevada QB Opens His Bible ‘Every Night’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Chubba Purdy, younger brother of 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, relies on the Bible as he serves as the University of Nevada’s quarterback.
“I mean, every night, I open up my Bible. I get in the Word. I make sure I do everything before I get in the Word,” he told Sports Spectrum about how he faces challenges. “Whatever I got extra to do because I really want to be focused. You know, it talks about like Joshua 1:8, ‘Meditate on the Word day and night, so you can be careful to do everything written in it.’ And that key word for me is meditate.”
“I don’t want to just read the Word just to check off the box and say I read it,” Purdy continued. “You know, I’m really siting there, and sometimes I catch myself just reading and I’m like, ‘What did I just read?’ So I’ll go back, reread, try to fully understand it and just really spend that one-on-one time with God at nighttime when I’m alone. And every single night, man, I like, I crave for it, you know, it’s just the best thing ever.”
Purdy is a redshirt senior at the University of Nevada. Before transferring to Nevada, he played quarterback for the Nebraska Corn Huskers.
While at Nebraska, Purdy “appeared in 12 games with four starts over the past two seasons (2022-23)…Threw for 382 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 180 yards and another score for the Huskers in 2023.”
Before that, he played at Florida State University and “became just the fifth true freshman in FSU history to start at quarterback, passing for 181 yards and two scores in that start against N.C. State.”
While he doesn’t post much, the athlete is open about his faith on social media. His Instagram bio declares, “Saved by Jesus Christ.”
In a post from last season, Purdy wrote, “Thankful” and cited 1 Peter 1:6. In another post, he shared Philippians 4:7.
Movieguide® previously reported on his brother Brock Purdy:
The San Francisco 49ers are headed to Super Bowl LVIII.
Quarterback Brock Purdy gave God the glory for the opportunity after his team overcame a 17-point deficit to take a 34-31 win over the Detroit Lions.
“First of all, glory to God. He’s given us this opportunity,” he said. “For us, it’s a team sport. We knew we had a half left. Defense did their job, the boys on offense took care of business. Coaches called a great game. And we had the faithful behind us the whole way. So, we love you guys.”
Despite being down 17 at the half, Purdy turned up the heat and decided the game wasn’t over yet.
“Just the feeling of redemption, coming back, it’s huge,” Purdy said after the game in a press conference. “To see the clock hit zero and you’re up, it was special to all of us.”
