‘Glory to God’: Brock Purdy Leads 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII

The San Francisco 49ers are headed to Super Bowl LVIII.
Quarterback Brock Purdy gave God the glory for the opportunity after his team overcame a 17-point deficit to take a 34-31 win over the Detroit Lions.
“First of all, glory to God. He’s given us this opportunity,” he said. “For us, it’s a team sport. We knew we had a half left. Defense did their job, the boys on offense took care of business. Coaches called a great game. And we had the faithful behind us the whole way. So, we love you guys.”
Despite being down 17 at the half, Purdy turned up the heat and decided the game wasn’t over yet.
“Just the feeling of redemption, coming back, it’s huge,” Purdy said after the game in a press conference. “To see the clock hit zero and you’re up, it was special to all of us.”
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said post-game, “We played as bad of a first half as we could, but we were still within 17; there’s plenty of points there you could make up. We had to score on the first drive — we got a field goal and not a touchdown, which hurt — but then our guys got those turnovers, kept it rolling. (The defense) shut ’em out there in the second half, and this dude [Purdy] right next to me made it happen.”
Purdy also told NFL’s Omar Ruiz, “Down 17 at the half, our whole team was just, ‘Gotta find a way.’ You know, our season’s on the line, obviously the first half performance was tough, and so we were like ‘You know what, backs (are) against the wall, let’s just go, let’s try to get some momentum rolling, gets some points up on the board,’ so we were able to find a way.”
Purdy and the 49ers will face the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 11 at Super Bowl LVIII.
The quarterback frequently speaks about his faith. In December, he posted, “Little Moments🙏🏼 Thank you Lord,” along with photos from a recent game.
Movieguide® recently reported on Purdy’s faith:
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy explained that faith in Jesus, not fame or success, makes life worth living.
In a video for Sports Spectrum, the quarterback discussed how his mindset needed to change after he landed his role in the NFL.
“I didn’t want to grip on to this life of, ‘My gosh, I’m in the NFL. I have a starting quarterback role. I can’t lose it,’” he began. “That was flipped. I was reminded, you know, of what Jesus told us thousands of years ago in terms of don’t try to hold on to your life. You’re going to lose it, you know, and the world wants you to go this way or that way.”
“And the minute you have fame and if you’re trying to chase status and money and all this kind of stuff, you’ll lose your life rather that, you know, denying yourself, picking up your cross,” Purdy said. “Keeping my eyes on Jesus and His promises. And through that, like that’s life and that’s a life worth living. And that’s how you save your life. And that’s in Christ.”
