Less than two months after announcing his plans to host a Christian alternative to the Super Bowl halftime show, Cory Asbury revealed that he and Forrest Frank have decided not to go through with the idea.

“Hey friends – I want to update everyone and clear the air about the ‘alternative halftime show.’ What started as a dream to lift up the name of Jesus during one of the biggest moments of the year began to devolve into something else, something distracting. After much prayer, we’ve decided not to move forward with it in its current form. Not forever, just not now,” Asbury wrote.

“The dream was never about rivalry,” Asbury continued. “It’s not us vs. Bad Bunny. It’s not us vs. Turning Point USA. It’s not about politics, parties, or proving a point. The heart was never competition, just worship,” Asbury continued. “We want whatever we do next to be pure and focused solely on Jesus, not on headlines, not on hype. We do believe there is something great to come in the spirit of what we’re dreaming up, but sense there is a different expression God has in mind.”

The decision to end the effort to create a Christian halftime show alternative comes as a shock given that Asbury gave an update on the idea less than a week ago, sharing his and Frank’s excitement to continue pursuing the idea.

“We want this to be a Jesus moment, we want this to be a time where culture is doing one thing and we’re doing another: We’re glorifying the name of Jesus, we’re showing He preeminence, we’re worshipping, we’re praying,” the singer shared in the update, explaining his vision for the show. “I almost see it as an evangelistic, Billy Graham crusade kind of thing, where there’s a call to the altar. There’s a call to give lives to Jesus and there’s mass salvation taking place across this nation. How beautiful would that be?”

Asbury and Frank first floated the idea of a Christian halftime show alternative at the beginning of October, pitching the idea after seeing years of the show not be suitable for a family audience.

“What if we did an alternative, family-friendly halftime show for the Super Bowl? Every year, everyone is all up in arms about the performer for the halftime show, and I get it because nine times out of 10, it’s raunchy as heck. You’re seeing stuff you don’t want to see. You’re hearing stuff you don’t want to hear, especially for your kids,” Asbury asked in the video where he first pitched the idea.

“My vision is this: blow it up huge. Let’s get a stadium. Let’s go crazy while people are glorifying money and fame and sex and all kinds of stuff that we don’t want to see. We can lift up the name of Jesus,” Asbury added. “If you’re down, like this post, share it with your friends and suggest who you think should join us for this show.”

While it is discouraging to hear that the plan to create a Christian halftime show alternative was canceled, fans can only trust that Asbury and Frank are relying what they are hearing from the Lord and that His plan is greater than anything we could ever imagine.
