Don’t expect to hear any “adult” jokes in a MARIO movie any time soon!

“I think of children as ‘adults, they just don’t have as much knowledge yet,’” Mario creator and SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE executive producer Shigeru Miyamoto told NintendoLife. “That’s why I don’t want to make them laugh with dirty jokes, and I’ve even given Chris [Pratt, the voice of Mario] a ban on dirty jokes.”

He explained, “Action is something that both adults and children can understand equally, so I think if we make it with action as the main focus, we can create a film that won’t be boring.”

Miyamoto recently spoke to GameReactor about SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE, explaining how the movie’s fast pace was designed for its younger viewers.

“It depends entirely on Illumination’s input. The people at Illumination, including the director, know SUPER MARIO better than we do,” he said, referring to the franchise’s animation company.

Miyamoto said this “high level of intensity” was made with children in mind — “Parents might be sitting there out of a sense of responsibility when they take their kids to the movies, or that it’s a touching story for the parents but the kids are running around the theater. I’ve long wanted to make an animated film that isn’t like that, so in that regard, I think it was a good decision to make a film that ends with a bang after 90 minutes without giving the viewer a chance to catch their breath.”

He previously spoke about his desire for the SUPER MARIO movies to bring families together.

“The other thing that I would love for people to do is to actually go to the theater as a family,” Miyamoto told Polygon. “I always say, ‘Please cheer Mario on as a whole family.’ This idea of a child going to the theater with their parents, that becomes a talking point for them with their friends or with their family. So I would love to see this expand within the family.”

There’s no word yet on whether or not a third MARIO movie has been greenlit but, based on SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE’s box office numbers — it’s expected to cross the $1 billion this month — fans can expect another installment in the franchise.

Miyamoto’s dedication to making movies that keep the focus on children is proof that family-friendly content will always win out at the box office!
