Content:
(BBB, PP, CapCap, FR, V, M) Very strong moral worldview extols true friendship, honesty, sticking by good friends, helping good friends avoid bad people and do the right thing, with strong American, pro-capitalist content, including using inventions to help and serve people rather than to take advantage of people or for selfish reasons, plus villain uses Hindu greeting, “Namaste,” but he comes off as pompous when he does it, and it turns out he’s also insincere about it; no foul language but some exclamatory remarks like “My gosh” and dialogues that sounds like “Crabcake!” plus some light scatological jokes such as sentient strawberry gets scared and strawberry jelly comes out of its bottom, but it’s sweet, so monkey eats it, a dirty diaper joke (but nothing shown), and a character is delivering a cow’s baby when he’s suddenly called away on an important mission; light cartoon violence includes scary food monster appears to attack people, “tacodile” monster roars at people, and they run from it, slapstick comedy, pratfalls, a couple groin hits (one occurs over the end credits), and villain ties people up and dangles them over a food shredder, but tables are turned, and it’s implied he dies instead; no sexual content; no nudity; no alcohol use; no smoking or drugs; and, greedy villain lies and tries to turn hero against his friends.
More Detail:
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 is a feast of fun. It’s also a visual feast with plenty of clever animation to tickle your family’s funny bone.
CLOUDY 2 takes up right where the first movie left off. Young inventor Flint Lockwood and his friends have saved the world from his food machine, which has dropped all sorts of humongous food across the globe.
Now, however, his hometown has to be cleaned up from all the gigantic food particles. Who should volunteer to do the cleanup but Flint’s childhood hero, Chester V, the eccentric genius behind the global company Live Corp. Chester V sends a team to clean up the mess and offers Flint a job at his company in FranJose.
Everything changes when it appears that Flint’s food machine has survived and is now creating huge, monstrous food-animals – foodimals! Only Flint can shut down the machine before the foodimals attack the mainland. So, Chester V sends Flint on a secret mission to do just that. However, Flint’s idol has an ulterior motive, which endangers Flint, his father, and their new friends, including Flint’s girlfriend, Sam Sparks.
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 is cute, funny and exciting. The colorful animation is a visual feast, and the foodimals are delightful creations. For example, there’s not only the tacodile, which looks like a dangerous, messy refugee from Taco Bell. There’s also flamangoes, watermelophants, shrimpanzees, the hippotatomus, giant wild scallions, fruit cockatiels, the apple piethon, the bananostrich, and a giant cheeseburger turned into a French fry-legged spider! [SPOILERS FOLLOW] The twist to the scary food monsters is that, as Flint’s girlfriend discovers, the foodimals are no danger at all. They’re just goofy, harmless examples of Flint’s vivid, creative, inventive mind. The plot question is: Can Flint’s girlfriend convince Flint that the foodimals are harmless before the villain drives an unbreakable wedge between Flint and his friends and takes control of Flint’s food machine?
An interesting aspect of the story in CLOUDY 2 is that the villain thinks of himself not only as part showman, part inventor and part businessman but also part guru. To symbolize his desire to play guru to everyone, the villain often twists his body into prayerful yoga positions while greeting people with “Namatse,” the Hindu greeting meant to imply that we are all One, and we are all part of the same Essence. In reality, however, the villain is completely selfish and considers himself better than everyone else. In fact, he’s so self-centered that he creates holograms of himself to do all his brainstorming with them alone and no one else. In other words, no one is as smart as Chester V, and all people are just tools so that he can get what he wants. Even before the movie reveals all this, however, Chester V’s phony use of the Hindu greeting comes off as pompous.
Ultimately, one of the movie’s messages is that bad company corrupts good character, so be sure to pick your friends wisely (see 1 Corinthians 15:33). Thus, Flint has to learn who his true friends are. Eventually, it’s Sam, Flint’s closest friend, who figures out that none of the foodimals are harmful because, ultimately, they originate from Flint’s own creative mind (in the form of Flint’s invention, the food machine). Sam knows the goodness that’s inside Flint, and she helps Flint bring it out so that Flint can stick by his friends and defeat the bad guy.
There is some light scatological humor in CLOUDY 2 as well as cartoon violence and slapstick comedy. A few of the foodimals are scary at first, but they just become fun and funny in the second half. A little strawberry creature is one of the movie’s most delightful and charming creations. All in all, therefore, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 is a beguiling banquet for boys and girls of all ages.
