COLD BROOK

“Nothing Extraordinary in this Adventure”

What You Need To Know:

COLD BROOK is a 2018 drama about a man named Ted Markham and his best friend, George “Hilde” Hildebrandt, who discover a man inside the college museum they work at. The duo must figure out a way to get him back home. Meanwhile, they must also mend their relationships with their respective wives and children while dealing with the real possibility of losing their jobs due to the mysterious man they’ve found. Right off the bat, this movie starts with promise, with fun dynamics among the four friends after a paintball excursion, good-natured humor, a beautiful country song, and impressive cinematography.

However, the story and the main problem that the characters must resolve don’t make sense. Some conflicts between characters arise and are not addressed again. COLD BROOK contains a light moral worldview with the two main characters helping the mysterious figure find his way home and an acknowledgement of the afterlife. They encourage one another to help and show concern for the man’s well-being and safety. Both try to do the right thing, with one of them attempting to save his marriage. There are a few moments of drinking and smoking peppered in the movie. MOVIEGUIDE® recommends caution for older children, including young teenagers, and sensitive adults.

Right off the bat, this movie starts with promise, with fun dynamics among the four friends after a paintball excursion, good-natured humor, a beautiful country song, and impressive cinematography. Even William Fichtner, Kim Coates, and Harold Perrineau, along with some of the supporting cast, including Mary Lynn Rajskub and Robin Weigert, deliver strong, committed performances here.

However, the story and the main problem that the characters must resolve don’t make sense. Some conflicts between characters arise and are not addressed again. The whole reason for the men’s motivation does not make sense because of the identity and state of the mystery man. Additionally, the movie drags and slogs along, which can cause anyone to check out. It does not convey the impression that the main characters learn from or change as a result of the experience. The ending is satisfying but lacks a strong emotional impact.

COLD BROOK begins with Hilde and his friends, Ronnie and Meisenger, as they play paintball and chase Ted through a forest. The next day, Ted makes breakfast and coffee for his wife and tells his son to go to school, but he has a distant relationship with both of them. He has breakfast at the local diner with Hilde, and they head to work as maintenance at the museum. One night, they discover a stranger has broken into the museum and follow him outside, only to be met by the students outside.

The following day, Ted and Hilde end up on the front page of the newspaper and the news labels them as “Heroes of the Week.” They go about their workday as usual, and that night, they find the same man in the museum; the security guard, Chip, confronts them. They tell Chip that they found the man, but Chip does not see him and leaves. Ted and Hilde look back and notice the man in question has vanished. They set out on a journey to discover who this mysterious man is and what his connection is to the two of them.
