GUNNER

What You Need To Know:

GUNNER is an action movie streaming on Apple TV+ starring Luke Hemsworth and Morgan Freeman. The movie follows war hero Lee Gunner, who is estranged from his family. Despite his prolonged absence, Lee invites his two sons, Tyler and Luke, on a camping trip in hopes of reconnecting. They stumble across a major drug trafficking operation. After the drug traffickers kill the boys' uncle, Jon, Lee takes matters into his own hands, killing most of the group. However, after several DEA agents arrive and confiscate most of the group's illegal drugs, the head of the operation, Dobbs, forces Lee to help him get the drugs back, threatening to kill both of his sons if he resists.

Although GUNNER aims no higher than a cookie-cutter action movie, it falls short with little to no redeeming qualities. The shotty production quality, boring script, and mediocre acting—even with the likes of Luke Hemsworth and Morgan Freeman—do little to cushion the blow for moviegoers. Due to excessive but poorly executed violence, foul language, and drugs, MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution for all viewers.

Content:

(B, LLL, VV, A, NN, DD, M):

Dominant Worldview and Other Worldview Content/Elements:
This is an extremely shallow action movie with little to no worldview present, there are minor moral elements, such as fighting for the ones we love, and even a semblance of forgiveness towards the end of the movie, however, these minor messages are marred by excessive violence and foul language, as well as shotty directing and acting;

Foul Language:
Over 50 combined obscenities throughout the movie, including many uses of "f--k," "s--t," "bulls--t," "a--hole," "goddamn," "ass," "bastard," "hell," several "Jesus Christ" profanities, other inappropriate language includes uses of "idiot," "skank," and "shut up";

Violence:
Children in peril, multiple shoot outs with guns, many characters are shot and killed, some are shot in the head, a man falls on his rifle and shoots himself, lots of blood throughout when blades are used in fighting sequences, bloody wounds are visible, a character is stabbed in the throat, people who are on fire are thrown out of a plane, a scene with a dead animal covered in flies; Alcohol Use/Abuse: Lots of background drinking in bars, wine with dinner, someone mentions that it would be ok for a child to have a “few beers”;

Sex:
No explicit sex, teen boy sleeps with his girlfriend, but his father intervenes;

Nudity:
Upper female nudity at a strip club;

Smoking and/or Drug Use and Abuse:
The villains are drug dealers, there are mentions of drugs (cocaine, fentanyl), a character talks about a character being hooked on painkillers and overdosing; and,

Miscellaneous Immorality:
The main plot of the movie centers around a drug trafficking gang, other characters struggle with drugs, but the movie never makes a moral stance on the drugs.

More Detail:

GUNNER is an action movie streaming on Apple TV+ starring Luke Hemsworth and Morgan Freeman. The movie follows war hero Lee Gunner, who is estranged from his family. Despite his prolonged absence, Lee invites his two sons, Tyler and Luke, on a camping trip in hopes of reconnecting.

Lee and his boys stumble across a major drug trafficking operation while they’re camping. After the drug traffickers kill the boys’ uncle, Jon, Lee takes matters into his own hands, killing most of the group. However, after several DEA agents arrive and confiscate most of the group’s illegal drugs, the head of the operation, Dobbs, forces Lee to help him get the drugs back, threatening to kill both of his sons if he resists.

Lee realizes he needs leverage over Dobbs and breaks into the prison, freeing Dobbs, the leader of the entire operation. Lee goes on a physical journey to keep his boys safe and must face the fact that his absence has negatively impacted their childhood. Only he can decide if he’ll abandon his morals while working alongside the drug traffickers.

While an action movie starring Luke Hemsworth and Morgan Freeman seems like an engaging shoo-in, GUNNER lacks value. Instead, the movie relies on excessive violence and foul language to engage the audience, letting character, plot, and moral lessons fall by the wayside.

Unfortunately, the movie’s lackluster CGI, lousy script, and unmotivated acting don’t help its case. For all its immoral embellishments, mostly bloody violence and foul language, this is a mindless, shallow, and poorly executed action movie—even by cookie-cutter movie standards. Due to its excessive violence, foul language throughout, and frequent discussion of drugs, MOVIEGUIDE® advises viewers to skip GUNNER altogether.
