MADAME WEB

"A Celebration of the Maternal Instinct"

What You Need To Know:

MADAME WEB is a Marvel superhero movie about Cassandra Webb, a 30-year-old paramedic in New York City who drives an ambulance in Manhattan with her friend, Ben. Cassie was born in the Peruvian Amazon jungle when her mother died during childbirth. Cassie doesn’t know that her life was saved in Peru when a unique spider venom was applied. Cassie starts to see visions of the future when she plunges into the water off a bridge while working on an accident. Eventually, she must use her power to save three teenage girls who are being stalked by a man who thinks the girls are going to kill him seme day.

In the Marvel comic books, Madame Web has an array of occult psychic powers. However, this origin movie downplays some of the occult content in the comics to create an exciting, humor-filled story about a woman taking on the responsibilities of motherhood. MADAME WEB also has a pro-life attitude. However, the villain in MADAME WEB is a bit lackluster, and the movie has some incidental, mostly light, foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution.

More Detail:

MADAME WEB is a Marvel superhero movie about a young woman who was born in the Peruvian Amazon jungle when her mother died during childbirth and who must defend three teenage girls 30 years later from a man with superpowers who’s trying to kill them because he thinks the girls will kill him when they get older. MADAME WEB downplays the psychic powers of the woman in the original Marvel comics to create an exciting, humor-filled story about a woman taking on the responsibilities of motherhood, but the villain is a bit lackluster, and the movie has some incidental, but mostly mild, foul language.

Cassie Webb is a 30-year-old paramedic in New York City who drives an ambulance in Manhattan with her friend, Ben. Cassie grew up in the foster care system after being born in the Peruvian Amazon jungle when her mother, a research scientist, died during childbirth. Cassie starts to see visions of the immediate future when she plunges into the water after saving a man whose car crashed on a bridge.

Cassie thinks her mother abandoned her as a baby. However, what Cassie doesn’t know is that, 30 years ago, her pregnant mother, Mary, was searching in the Amazon jungle for a special spider species that might have great curative powers. Mary found one of the spiders, but her guide, a man named Ezekiel, betrayed her, and Mary was shot during a physical struggle. Ezekiel ran off with the spider, but Mary’s baby was saved by a jungle tribe of men who have developed Spider-Man powers from being bitten by the spider species. In trying to save the mother and baby’s lives, the tribe used some spider venom, but only Cassie survived.

Meanwhile, Ezekiel has become wealthy and also lives in New York City. However, he’s plagued by dreams where three women with superhero outfits end up killing him. Using computer technology, he’s identified their faces as teenagers and is now searching the city for them. He plans to kill them before they can kill him.

Cassie ends up being on a subway train with the three teenagers. She foresees Ezekiel boarding the train and killing the three girls. So, she forces the girls to leave the train just as Ezekiel starts to come after them.

An elaborate chase ensues with Ezekiel able to climb walls and ceilings. Clearly, he’s taken the spider venom just like the Amazon jungle tribe in Peru. Cassie manages to get the girls to safety. She then finds out that all three girls are living on their own, having been orphaned or neglected by their parents. So, Cassie must take the girls under her wing and protect them from Ezekiel by using her powers to foresee the immediate future.

In the Marvel comic books, Madame Web has a whole array of occult psychic powers. However, this origin movie downplays the mystical occult content in the comics to create an exciting, humor-filled story about a woman taking on the responsibilities of motherhood. As a result, the movie becomes a nice celebration of the maternal instinct. In fact, the heroine finds a new purpose and meaning in life when she takes on the responsibility of caring for, protecting and guiding the three teenage girls. MADAME WEB also has a pro-life attitude. However, the villain in MADAME WEB is a bit lackluster and undeveloped, and the movie has a mixture of light and strong foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution.
