"Expertly Defending the Right to Life"

What You Need To Know:

40 is a highly informative documentary presenting the arguments and realities favoring the pro-life position on the issue of abortion. The movie uses interviews with pro-life leaders from many organizations, from Priests for Life to Feminists for Life. It also features interviews with women who’ve had abortions and regret their decisions, including women who were raped, plus interviews with women who decided not to have abortions and interviews with children who almost were aborted. The movie reveals many eye-opening statistics about abortion as well as many valuable pro-life arguments.

Despite a lot of talking heads, 40 is an emotionally powerful and intellectually stimulating movie. It offers viewers many really good, rational arguments favoring the pro-life position, including important statistics. For example, Dr. Day Gardner, president of the National Black Pro-Life Union says there is no greater attack on black life than abortion. She and the documentary note that abortion is the No. 1 cause of death among African-Americans! As Father Frank Hoffman of Relevant Radio says, “If there’s no right to live, no other rights matter.” 40 is a must-see movie.

Content:

(BBB, CCC, H, Fe, V, S, N, M) Very strong moral, biblical view supporting the pro-life movement opposing abortion, with very strong Christian content, plus some references to some self-described humanists, atheists and feminists who, however, share the pro-life position; no foul language; discussion of abortion and rape, but no violent visual imagery; some references to rape but no salacious content; some brief images of nude babies, but nothing salacious; no alcohol; no smoking or drugs; and, a pro-abortion leader is interviewed but her arguments are refuted and there is talk that the pro-life movement needs to be more than just a religious movement because the abortion supporters like to pigeonhole, marginalize and demonize the pro-life movement.

More Detail:

40 is a really good, highly informative, and extremely useful documentary presenting the arguments and realities favoring the pro-life position on the issue of abortion. Though it has a lot of talking heads and needs a better narrative structure, it’s an emotionally powerful and intellectually stimulating must-see movie.

Along the way, the movie reveals many eye-opening statistics about abortion as well as many valuable pro-life arguments.

40 offers viewers many really good, rational arguments favoring the pro-life position, including some important statistics.

For example, Dr. Day Gardner, president of the National Black Pro-Life Union says there is no greater attack on black life than abortion. She and the documentary note that abortion is the No. 1 cause of death among African-Americans, more so than AIDs, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and violence combined! Thus, of the 3,300 or so abortions in the United States every day, about 1,452 are of black unborn babies, both girls and boys. That compares to 825 abortions for Latina women.

The documentary also points out that Planned Parenthood, the extremist pro-abortion group, targets minority neighborhoods, with 79% of its pro-abortion clinics located in such neighborhoods. Also, Planned Parenthood performs 167 abortions for every one adoption referral in their clinics. Clearly, Planned Parenthood’s agenda is to kill as many African-American and Latino-American children as possible.

Several pro-life leaders argue that the best way to fight abortion and make it illegal is to promote the idea that preborn children have a right to live because science shows each preborn child is an individual person, not a blob of tissue. Both ultrasound technology and the unique genetic makeup of a preborn child support this idea of Personhood. Also, every healthy preborn child has a heartbeat 18 days after conception. If these children are not a person, what are they?

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” says Father Frank Hoffman, executive director of Relevant Radio, quoting Martin Luther King, Jr. “If there’s no right to live, no other rights matter.”

Rape, including incest, is not an excuse for having an abortion, the movie’s pro-life leaders argue. A couple of the leaders are actually children of rape, but their mothers couldn’t or wouldn’t kill them and gave them up for adoption. These pro-life leaders note that Americans, including those supporting abortion, don’t believe rapists deserve the death penalty. So, why should Americans believe that the children of rape deserve the death penalty? If there’s no death penalty for a rapist, then there should be no death penalty for a preborn child.

“I didn’t have a rapist’s baby,” one rape victim says in the movie. “I had MY baby.”

She adds, “Abortion is not the answer to rape. Rape is not an excuse for abortion.”

“Children are now a commodity to be created, bought, sold, and discarded,” says Jewels Green of Feminists for Life while discussing the incident of a surrogate mother who still got paid when the would-be “parents” agreed to have a preborn child with Downs Syndrome aborted.

“Abortion is a betrayal of feminism,” adds Sheri Foster of Feminists for Life.

Of course, abortion is also a betrayal of humanity and of God, and of the human rights that are etched in God’s Law and in the Magna Carta, the United States Constitution and its amendments, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights.

40 is an important documentary for spreading the pro-life message. All Christians and all churches should use it to educate themselves and their fellow brothers and sisters in the faith.
