BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT

"Taking Personal Responsibility in the Hood"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

BARBERSHOP:  THE NEXT CUT stars Ice Cube as Calvin, who’s still trying to make it in his barbershop on Chicago’s South Side. The recession has forced him to team up with a beauty salon. Calvin’s opening narration reveals that the neighborhood is overrun with violence, gangs and broken homes. Worse, his 14-year-old son is getting rebellious and in danger of joining a gang. Calvin’s inspired to stand up against the crime wave. He tricks two rival gang leaders into having a ceasefire, while his barbershop and the beauty salon offer free services and a freewheeling discussion of social problems and romantic entanglements.

BARBERSHOP:  THE NEXT CUT is highly entertaining. Many funny and serious moments abound. It offers an important message of people handling social problems themselves instead of relying on government assistance to save them. There are also some beautiful messages about the importance of fathers and the value of intact homes. That said, there’s plenty of PG-13 foul language and some off-color innuendoes, so strong caution is advised. Beyond that, however, BARBERSHOP:  THE NEXT CUT has a lot of good values.

Content:

(BBB, CapCap, ACAC, C, PP, Ho, LLL, V, S, A, M) Very strong moral, pro-capitalist worldview that eschews government assistance in favor of people fending for themselves to solve problems, with a message that’s anti-violence and pro-family while showing the importance of fathers and the value of intact homes, as well as a scene of forgiveness, plus movie has a positive view of most African-Americans, despite gang problems and family dysfunction in the neighborhood, and some comical speculation about Hillary Clinton’s sexual proclivities and a barber truthfully but repeatedly has to deny he’s “gay”; about 76 obscenities and profanities (including one “f” word); light violence consists of overheard offscreen gunshots, some news footage of shot people, and a near-fistfight between two rival gang leaders; some sexual innuendo includes discussion of women’s bottoms and sex, married man things single woman is inviting him top a rendezvous, but it’s a misunderstanding, and nothing happens, there’s humorous speculation whether President Obama is faithful to his wife and whether Hillary Clinton is secretly looking for women, and a woman dances suggestively at one point; no nudity, but one woman with a large bottom wears tight clothing and displays some cleavage; alcohol use; no smoking or drug use; and, some relatively good-natured insults and teasing, gang members try to recruit teenagers into their gangs, and President Obama shows up at the barbershop, but it’s mostly played for comedy.

More Detail:

The fourth installment in the BARBERSHOP franchise, BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT follows the story of a Chicago barber and family man who organizes a two-day gang truce and hair-cutting marathon while all manner of personal shenanigans take place. Highly entertaining, THE NEXT CUT has a strong moral worldview with an essential and universal message of hope, but also has plenty of PG-13 foul language, so strong caution is advised.

The movie stars Ice Cube as Calvin, who’s still trying to make it in his barbershop on the South Side of Chicago. The recession has forced him to team up with a beauty salon. This gives the movie a strong balance of male and female characters that greatly improves the comic performances and writing of the first two movies. With his son 14-years-old now and getting rebellious, Calvin is concerned he’ll join a gang and ruin his life.

Meanwhile, Calvin’s opening narration shows Chicago to be the nightmare it is in real life: overrun with violence, gangs and broken homes. Calvin is inspired to stand up against the crime wave. He tricks two rival gang leaders into meeting and having a 48 hour cease fire, during which time he and his fellow barbers and stylists will bring the community together with a marathon of free haircuts and discussion of social problems.

Other shenanigans happen, as the barbers banter and argue about politics, relationships and much more. Also, various people experience romantic entanglements and misunderstandings, which are handled with taste and discretion. While this movie is entertaining, it’s also invaluable and important for addressing the fact that governments can’t save communities, but only personal values and standing up for good can do so.

Free flowing with plenty of funny and serious moments, BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT feels like a true labor of love from all involved. It offers an important message of people handling social problems themselves instead of relying on government assistance to save them. There are also some beautiful messages about the importance of fathers and the value of intact homes. That said, there’s plenty of PG-13 foul language, so strong caution is advised. Beyond that, however, BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT is a highly entertaining dramatic comedy with a lot of good values in it.
