Content:

(CCC, BBB, H, L, V, S, A, M) Very strong Christian worldview with strong moral elements, including main characters go to church, priest mentions the power of God and salvation, character fights for the worth of each individual, “by the grace of God” is said, plus a humanist comment about using law rather than religion, though truly good law is always based on the divine, moral character of God, as revealed in the Bible; two light obscenities, three light profanities; light violence when man shoves woman; no sex scenes but romance, child born out of wedlock, and one kiss; no nudity, but one low cut dress on a woman; light drinking; no smoking or drug use; and, father dies and other father does not take responsibility for his child.

BELLE is an incredible true story about a mixed race, illegitimate woman trying to find her place in the world so she can help change society during the 18th Century. BELLE is a very well done period piece that will keep the audeince entertained throughout, with a strong Christian, moral worldview.

Dido Elizabeth Belle is a mixed race, illegitimate girl who has been taken in by her Great Uncle, Lord Mansfield. Lord Mansfield is a renowned Judge who has wealth and prestige. Mansfield has also taken in Dido’s cousin, Elizabeth.

Growing up, Dido is trying to determine her place in the world. Because of her skin color, she’s not fully accepted even by her family. Dido finds out that her father, who was a Royal Navy Admiral, has died and left her a large sum of money.

It is now time for Dido and Elizabeth to come out in society to marry, but Mansfield decides it will only be Elizabeth coming out. Longing to be married herself, Dido is saddened by this, but Mansfield believes that, because of Dido’s skin color, she won’t be wanted by a man of society. Happily, Dido can live very well off her inheritance. However, Elizabeth has no dowry and will receive no inheritance. This puts both Dido and Elizabeth in an awkward position because Dido has suitors who are interested in her because of her wealth, but they worry her skin color will shame their name, while Elizabeth has the conventional elegance, but no wealth and therefore is undesirable.

Lord Mansfield has received a young man named Davinier who wants to learn from him to become a lawyer. Davinier is a spirited young man who wants to change society and law for the better. His father being a pastor, Davinier has no title or money, but he’s eager and passionate.

One day Dido bumps into Davinier, and they start to argue. This continues, but later Davinier reveals to Dido the lawsuit currently in the news has to do with the worth of slaves. Increasingly interested, Dido soaks up everything she can from Davinier on the case while at the same time giving her own opinions. The case can change history forever, and the final decision will come down to Dido’s Great Uncle, Lord Mansfield.

BELLE is a wonderful movie that has both romance but historical importance. Extremely well produced, the story and movie ranks right up there with the best Jane Austen stories and movies. BELLE has beautiful costuming and set design. The acting is very well done, especially from Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who plays the lead character Dido. Overall, audiences will cry and be enthralled with BELLE.

BELLE has a very strong Christian, moral worldview with overtly positive Christian content. The lead character and her love interest, Davinier, believe each person has worth. Davinier is the son of a pastor who has great hopes on changing society for the better. He does make one comment about how we must change the world through law rather than through religion, but overall he’s fighting for justice, freedom and the worth of an individual from a Christian perspective. Also, there are comments that we have a responsibility beyond faith to fight for what is right. Finally, Dido and her family attend church where the priest says God has power and that salvation was bought on the cross.
